Linnj I'ouuly J.epublis-au Convention A Republican convention for Linn county is hereby called to meet at the court house in Albany on April 4th at 10 a. m. for the purpose of A electing .delegates to the state re publican convention, which con venes in Portland April 11th, and for th purpose of placing in nom ination candidates lor the vanou.-, county offices, and to transact surh other business as may properly come before the convention. The convention will consist of 79 dele gates, appointed as follows: East Albany 9 West Albany 7 Ilalsey 6 Hurrisbunr 4 Brownsville 7 Shedd 5 Lebadon 7 Scio..' 3 Waterloo 4 Orledhs S i hundreds formerly fell i neat, is not sufficient ; on the con- j trary, it appears that if only the sod whence malarial effluvia have arisen could be kept permanently s aked with moisture, there would be no infection. The soil must be for a while sodden with moisture, then dried, before the invisib' effluvia the marsh miasma be come dangerous. The heat neces sary to produce the poison must be omewhat greater than 60 degrees, somewhat less than SO degrees; between these limit, but not out side them, heat does its poison- geeraiing wonc. we nave in these conditions alone a certain power of influencing malaria, as has bee" shown by repeated ex amples. I remember that in my boyhood aguish fevers were very nomnion in parts of Knt, near the shores of the Thames and Med way. The difference between the country and the towns in this respect was a subject of constant remark. But now, as I learn from relatives living in these regions, malarial troubles are much less prevalent, drainage having had a markedly beneficial effect. A similar change, on a larger scale, lias been produced in the eastern counties of England, where for merly aguish fevers were once very common. It seems strange now to think of ague as one of the chief death-dealing diseases of parts of England, insomuch that even in London, where now it is unknoivr, iave This WhBk! welties in Wash Dress 'Fabrics r ' CraWfordsville o! n hweet uome z Fox Valley.. 3 Center 3 Santiam 3 Franklin Butte 2 Syracuse 2 Liberty 'J. The rep'.y of the mayor of New Yok to the young man who iiad applied to him for assistance in I procuring a situation as an ap- j prentice to learn a trade, opens a I peculiar phase of American artisan j life. j Tb,e young man stated that he ! had applied to more than fifty eai " plovers for a position, and in every instance was informed that, there was no vacancies, as the rules only allowed them to employ a limited number of apprentices. The mayor j in his reply states that he is pow- erless to affer any assistance. He . citet the fact that the trades unions I In Switzerland the drainage of swamps has almost entirely killed out malaria in certain regions where it was once prevalent. They widened the channels of rivers running out of lakes in such sort as to lower the level of the lakes, and the lakes thus lowered drained the swamps. On the other hand, the bog lands of Ireland are free from malaria, whether because peat moss does not contain the poisonous materials, or because the bogs remain too constantly moisture-sodden, is not clear. It is stated also mat malaria is un known in the region of the Dismal swamp. . Elevation has a marked effect in regard to the prevalence of malaria, not only locally but generally. Thus in certain shore tracts it has been noticed that near the sea level there is no malaria, while, again, above a certain j height, as 300 or 400 fost. malaria j is absent; but between these the ' disease is destructive and preva ; lent. Yet elevation alone does not i prevent malaria from appearing. i laKing an mese statements into ' consideration, can we help orriv- ing at use conclusion tnat our Percales, Ind ago Blues and Fine Turkey Reds. 27" These goods must be sold.
