Claus Spreckxes, the sugar king of San Francisco, who has a personal interest in every cup of cofl'ee in which sugar is used on this coast, is said to be reaching out toward New York, with the ulterior motive of locating sugar refineries there, it is to be hoped that he will not be able to extend his finger into every sugar bowl in the entire country. It is rumored that a tile factory is to be established in this city, and it is to be hoped that the rumor has foundation in solid facts, for no more important industry could be started than that of placing the means of underdraw ing within the reach of the hus bandmen of this locality. No other means could be adopted, to so thoroughly enhance the value of the farming lands of this valley and increase the nrofits of farming. California fruit raisers are be ginning to consider the merits of the Bartlett pears as a marketable fruit. Many of their leading fruit men are of the opinion that the Bartlett pear promises to be a more paying crop than even the citrus fruits do. In this state the Bartlett has long led almost all other fruits in the estimation of fruit men, but very few, however, have acted upon that understanding, as there iire very few exclusively pear orchards. They would undoubt edly pay well. The Chronicle thinks that the Catholic church in New York seems to be exceeding its authority by refusing burial in consecrated ground to a man because he per sisted in listening to McGlynn's lectures. They should bear in mind that McGlynn was unfroirked for contumacy and not for his 'own opinions. No authoritative decla ration has yet been made regard ing the principles of the anti-poverty society, and until one is made it would hardly be fair, even from the theological standpoint, to punish Catholics for doing that which they are not forbidden to do. From the standpoint of Amer ican citizenship, the attempt to punish the holder of an opinion on any political or social question is entirely inadmissible. It is interesting to note that with all of the output of the vari- j ous gold mining operations, then is no very material enlargement of the gold coin m circulations is noticeable. It is asserted that the amount of gold coined, addr-d to that of goll consumed in the arts, exceeds the production by about 35 per cent. Since this exces-s can not all be drawn from the yield ot the mines year by year, it must, in .arge measure, be derived from the stock of coin in existence, as well as from that of manufactured vnhl - OomtilptH statistics on Mie . . point are Wanting, but pretty full :: ,. i , t i.i, inquiries made in regard to the United States for 1SS" resulted in Showing that only about one-1 f.,l. f tU f,.f.,l n,.mf,. tured was coin melted down, wliile one-twelfth was old jewelry. At this rate thy entire consumption of gold in the arts in the world would be over one-third of the ! entire production, and less than two-thirds of it would go to swell the world's stock of money. Much is said in reference to the decadence oi our merchant marine, but a study of our railroad trans portation buncs will offset any misgivings as to the country going to ruin. After reflecting a while on these facts, and upon the additional fact that our merchant marine effective ness is about 11.000,000 tons greater than at the beginning of the war, the reader will be likely to conclude that we have not aban doned the carrying business, even if our flag does not float over every ship that sails the ocean blue. A chaxge of conditions force an invariable change of plans. Most peopie will easily remember the scheme for flooding the Sahara desert by cutting a canal through from the Alediteranean, which aroused some interest a lew years ago. It was soon discovered that the Sahara could not be flooded, because as a whole it was above the sea-level, but there are some depressions near the coast which are lower than the ocean, and here the French government had several nrffsi:in waIIs sunt hv wnv of pv- I ... .. .r ..j - periment. The practical results have proved interesting. The first wells which were sunk yielded such an abundant supply of water that later comers were induced to bore similar ones for permanent use. I All these flowed so freely that by degrees the scheme for forming an inland sea was forgotten, and well sinking was begun on rather a large scale. NEW TO-DAY. Wanted .4. Lot or House stud Lot.
