Pacific steam ferryboat, the Acona,
which during the" night of Febru
ary 16th collided a bark, which
was lying at anchor in the Colum
bia river opposite Kalama. After
making a thorough investigation,
Capt. Scott was examined and no
blame as attached to any one on
the ship, which had entorced all

erly placed.

A republican convention for the
state of Oregon is called to meet at
the city of Portland, Oregon, on
Wednesday, the lltli dav of April,
A. D. 1888, at 11 o'clock, A. M.,
for the purpose of nominating can

three presidential electors, supreme
judge aud district officers, and to
select six delegates to attend the
national republican convention,

$500,000 for the building of a

Chinese, French, English, Danish,
Italian and Spanish officers anxiou-;

The cruiser, which is now on the
ways, has not yet been named, but
probabiy will be before her com
pletion, which will be in about
diree months. She is to make

3300 indicated horse power, and
four cylindrical locomotive boilers.
Her measurement will be 700 tons;
length, 240 feet; breadth, 26) feet

made in the shops of the firm.
The range of these guns will be at
Ua;t one mile. The lOJ inch
shell will carry 200 pouuds of ex
plosive gelatine equal to 326
pounds of dry gun cotton, and tue
12 inch sheil 400 pounds of ex
plosive gelatine, equal to 652

sheils, whicii are of very peculiar
construction, are being made at
one of the Government stations.
. The Zalinski gun is uo more like

. Its cheif peculiarities are
length and slimness. The project
ile force, as the name of the gun
pueumatic dynamite the torpedo
shows, is air, which is admitted
from compressing rtseivo rs. By
an automatic arrangement more
and more air is admitted as the
shell moves toward the muzzle.
The greatest pressure is upon the
projectile just as it leaves the gun.
J3y this use of compressed air the
danger ot exploding the dynamite
by a succen impact is avoided and
a greater force can be obtained. A
peculiarity of the torpedo shells
used in the gun is that the time of
their explosion cau be fixed so that
it shall not be until after they have
penetrated the armor if they should
strike a vessel, or until they shall
have passed beneath the surface if
tney suould flail into the water.
The concussion produced bv one
of these dynamite shells exploding
under water wiil be so tremendous
as to crash in the hull of any ordi
nary vessel. The range of the guu
is determined by the amount of
pressure pplied, and it can be
fixed ta a nicety. Other novel fea
tures ot za inski sun make it
so fori, idable for all kinds of naval
warfare, as well as for land fortifi
cations, that the interest shown by
toreign nations in it is amply jus
