Lewis & Sewed Iimrhes. my A Crazy Prisoner Attacks the Guard at the Penitentiary-Murderer Landreth, Special to the Herald Salem, Feb..' 11. Thomas Mc Cleilan a convict serving a sentence of ten years in the penitentiary, from Benton county, for attacking a boy with a pitch fork last year, this morning attacked the guard in the finishing shop of the foundry at tiie prison with a hammer, strik ing him a severe blow behind tiie ear. The other convicts seized him and he was locked up -in a cell. It had been evident for some i time that McCIellau was out of his right mind, and this afternoon he was examined and ordered com mitted to the asylum. REFUSED TO OUEY. Sheriff Graves, of Polk county, came over tiiis afternoon and took to Dallas a prisoner named lienne witz, who was confined here, the c urt having ord r i him take to ii tvit ... i ij lianas au j. oik coumy prisoners j in the Marion county jail. This I would include Landreth, the mur derer, but Mr. Graves positively refuses to obey the instructions of tiie court. Tie was blamed se verely for allowing Kelty to be lynched, when the county court had refused to allow him to be re moved to this city, and he don't propose to incur any more risks. OF 'IHA.XK. I At the musical concert last night the following resolutions were adopted : The second musical concert con ducted by Prof. George, having come to a close alter a most suc cessful term, the members of the same desire to take this opportu nity of offerinsr the following: Resolved, That we the members of this musical convention extend our hearty thanks to Prof. George for his able, efficient and instruct ive leadership : also to his assist ants Mrs. George and Miss Kings man. East Portland Packet : A. Stinit brought suit before Justice Bullock to recover $1'00 from Paul Fuhr, ( iratton, ernon and U ebber. lie claimed to have lost -SlOO at their gambling house in Portland. Justice Bullock rendered a decision giving the plaintiff $20. Defend ants produced in the trial a receipt for $10, signed by Stinit. It was also stated in the receipt that he tStinir; had.-lost $0 in gambiing ut the place of defendants. Justice Bullock, therefore, decided the pliintiff was entitled to $20, double tiie amount called for by the re ceipt. It seems now that gamblers make every one who gambles at their place sign just such a receipt, with the amount blank, which is filled out before thev leavn Arrested. George concert ves- terday afternoon a permanent con vention known as the Albany Musical convention was organized. A committee consisting of" J)r. (i. W. bray, Mrs. L. A. McConnell, A. W. Thompson, Mrs. II. Flint, Mrs. W. 8. Thompson, Kev. II. P. Webb and Kev. H. V, Kominger was appointed on organization. The following list of officers was elected: President, Dr. G. W. Gray; vice-president, Kev. E. K. Pridian 1; secretary, Miss Clara Head; treasurer, Miss Ada Simp son. Fined Filly Dollar. In the case of the city vs. II. Backensto for violating the ordin ance prohibiting minors from fre quenting saloons.the defendant w as found guilty and a fine of $50 was imposed by Recorder Menton.
