The hall was filled to full seating capacity at the opening hour and a full quorum of granges lepresented. The agent reported business oper ations in contemplation, and on motion they were referred to the committee on good ot the order. Resolutions were oiFcred by a. We have had about one month of snow this winter but the ever welcome cninook has come and the snow and cold weather has gone and the grass is beginning to grow, and the stockmen feel easier than th''v di'' two week "rn. During the cold snap the the m m eter registered o0 and 32 di-ccs below zero, a few of the coldest mornings. On the 3d Saturday of this month Mayville grange met with about the usual number of mem bers,' in spite of the snow and had a good and interesting meeting and installed the following officers, O. F. Kizer, M. ; W. Edwards, O. ; Mary Edelman, L. ; L. G. Edelman, S. ; O. J. Kizer, A S. ; Jane Edwards, Treas. ; C. S. i'erin Sec. ; V. E. Thornton S K. ; L. M. F., in stalled their officers o:: last Satur day night. They have a pretty strong lodge, and I think the only one in Gilliam county. I think a good blacksmith would do well in Mayville now provided he be a temperate man, as the gin shop keeps our present smith unfit for business most of the time, the aforesaid gin shop is a public nuis ance which Maj'ville could get along without. - The mail arrives here ever' eve ning but owing to the road being washed out between Condon and this piat-e it does not get here un til about 9 o'clock, due at 6 o'clock regular time. Clem, Oregon Feb. 5 AVe are having some fine weather alter the cold snap. Fall wheat is beginning to grow, and looks well Farmers are all busy plowing and preparing ground for spring seed ing. Cattle and horses look well considering the severity of the re cent storm. The i ecent high waters from the melting snow carried away the new bridge below Olex. In cross ing Scott's canyon during the high waters one of the stage horses fell and came near drowning. The country around here is fast filling up. Bad roads and high waters, have caused late stagging, one driver getting no sleep for thirty-six hours. Mr. Xylor, brother of Jos. Tylor lost over two hundred head" of sheep during the storm. Numbers of persons are looking for land in this vicinity. Mr L. Ground couuty surveyor is going to start on a surveying trip to.morrow and will be gone most of the week. Mr. J. H. A con ference was held last night con cerning the opening of Indian Ter ritory. It was completed by the adoption of a memorial to congress and a series of resolutions, which favor tlie opening of the territory for actual settlers only. Daniel fchelly was requested by Carson to continue as manager. Shelly say6 the embar assment is due to G. M. Hill, one of the stockholders, who had charge of the booking at the theatre. The thea er was originally built for Jack Haverly, who transferred it to a stock company composed of G. M. Hill, Margaret Mather and others. Hill put Shelly in as manager, but ever since the lat ter has had charge matters have u,..ne from bad to worse. Shell' is the man who a few months ago offered each purchaser of a seat a deed to a lot in California. Actable Dead. 7 Cincinnati, Feb. 9. Benjamin Eggleston died this morning aged 72 years. He served thirty years in the city council, two terms in congress, three terms in the sen ate, and was always prominent in political works. Exeeutrd n Jail. Utica, Feb. 9. The snow is all gone from off the valleys and surrounding foot hills since the past week. No rush of waters. The stock that were gathered to hay look well although tjie cold was so intense about the 8th to the 15th of January, 38 to 42 degrees below zero, it verily seemed they would freeze to death. While stock out on the range were compelled to browse on brush and sage which is very bitter, half starved along and but few dying, yet many of the cows are very poor and will perish breore spring if it should be unfavorable. The loss of sheep to the flock so far is very light except in a few instances it has been 100 to 150 head. The mercury for the past week has been up in the 40's. Eighty degrees makes a perceptable dif ference on the temperature out here to us mortals. The measels have been raging in the vicinity of Prinevilie prove ing fatal as we learn only in the case of Mrs. Charles Lister nee Clara, eldest daughter of D. Clay pool who has many relatives and friends in Linn county, The de ceased leaves three little boys, the youngest a babe. M COl.VI'Y 4LL1AME.
