Shupe, one of the prominent citizen sof Roseburg, and well known all over thte state, pass- ed away peacefully at his home in this city early Sunday morning, April 3, 1904, of heart failure, the termination of an illness of sovcral mouths. He was nearly 54 years of age. John H. Shupe, was born in Mis souri, on A pril 26, 1850. In 1853 his parents removed to Oregon, crossing the plains with an ox team, snd settled upon a donation land claim near Coles Valley, where they resided for a number o f years. On September 16, 1877, Mr. Shupe was united in marriage with Mary E. Kruse, and in 1878 opened a variety store in Oakland, Oregon. In 1881 he formed a partneiship with Dr. J. C. Shambrook under the firm name of J. H. Shupe <St Co. For a number of years he served as trustee and recorder for the town of Oakland. In 1885 he was elected state senator from Douglas county, and in 1889 was appointed chief clerk of the senate. In 1890 he removed to Roseburg, and received the appointment as Register of the U. S. land office for the Roseburg district. In 1896 he was elected county clerk and served for one term. During tha legislative ses sions of 1898, 1899 aud 1901 he served as chief clerk or reading clerk o f the stato senate. A t the time of his death the de ceased was oue of the leading mem bers of the First Christian church, of this place, also a member o f Rose burg L o d g e No. 13, A. F . & A. M.; Oak Camp No. 125, Woodmen of tho W orld; Lilac Circle, Women ol Woodcraft, and Home L od ge No. 24, of Oakland, A. O. U. W. He carried fraternal insurance in the sura of $2000 in the A. O. U. W „ $2000 in the W. of W., and a policy in the Conservative Life Insurance Co., of Los Angeles. Tho funeral was held this after noon from the Christian church nnd was very largely attended. Rev. Geo. B e s t C o ite li The Largest Grapevine. | From the Kansas City Journal, The largest grapevine in the | world is growing in the Carpinteria valley, 12 miles east of Kauta Har ! bara, California, aud is called La Fura Grande. It was started from a cutting 61 years ago by a young Spanish woman. Dona Aylu. It is eight feet four inches in circuui ference at its base, and one o f the horizontal branches measures more than three feet in circumference. The trellis covers about a third, of an acie, and 60 heavy posts sup port it. The vine produces as many as 5,000 bunches annually, at a conservative estimate, and in good years many clusters measure 12 to 15 inches in length and weigh six to eight pounds. Its owner esti mates that in 1895 the vine yielded 10 tons of grapes. . *•■ .
