We did not lake our suits in a nice, upholstered palace car, as is done nowadays, counting to the minute when we would arrive with kind friends to greet us in four or five days’ time. Perhaps the rea son for this was plainer to us at that time than it is to those who come now. I am not sure that aDy railroads were built at that lime west of the Mississippi river, and do not think there was any; but know right well that none were in existence west o f o f the Missouri river for many years after that date. Persons going to Oregon or Cal ifornia had their choice of three routes lo cross the plains; with leaving some point on the Mis. souri river, say early iu May, and arriving in Oregon in September, October, or iu some instances November. The other routes were by sailing vessels via Cape Horn, or by the Isthmus of Panama- W e selected the former, and like the great roajirity o f the pioneers o f those days, our “ mo tive power" (not to mention our neverfailiuu “ shanks' ponies") we started with teams composed of ox- eu, and sometimes a gentle cow that never failed to give a supply o f milk on the journey. We started with a six months' supply o f provisons, well knowing that we should be that time in reaching our destination. W e left the Missouri river neat the present site of Omahs, May 1, and here hade adieu to civilization, entereng at once upon the much heard of bat little known western plains. Near the bank o f the river was a large building, an Indian agency, ana this, exceptmg a very few di lapidated adobe buildings at Pori Hall, and old Fort Boise, was all the signs o f civilization that were to be seen on this tedious journey until Oregon was reached, five or six six mouths Inter, I could tpll of the timps wp had iu crossing many o f the steamers made impassable by the npriug storms, and how we con verted our wagon beds into ferry boats; bow we endured the fierce storms o f rain, hail, thunder and and lightning while traveling tip the Platte river and crossing (he Rocky mountains. O f how, in or der to preserve our eyes, we bad to wenr veils on aoconot o f the sharp-cutting sand blowu by the ever-preseut winds from the west; o f the laborious tramp, tramp, tramping all day beside the slow- ploddiDg teams; and the pleasure (?) o f standing guard a part of every .night to prevent our teams being stolen by Indians, or what was worse, by renegade whites, who had “ left their country for their coun try’s good,” and robbed and mur dered the emigrant adlibitum. Wood to cook onr frugal meals, also water for onr teams, was some times difficult to obtain, and in some instances it was neeessury to travel all day and night to obtain these essentials of life. When we reached the alkali region a number o f onr cattle died, and we bad to leave one o f our wagons. I t will never be known how many men, women and children who started to this coast 50 or more years ago, for the purpose o f mak ing this their home, have died, some from disease and many by tbe band of the ruthless savage. Th eir name is legiou. Early in October we reached the settlements in Oregon, nil alive and some o f us in better health than when wpstart- from Illinois. One o f tbe disap pointments we all found was tbe want of better mail facilities, but which wns common in many new countries. I am afraid to say for fenr my character for the truth may be questioned just bow long a time was required to receive an answer to a letter sent to fiieod s “ in tbe states." bnt it was several wepks if not months.
