Says Dr. Walm- sley, o f Darenth Asylum: “ The most potent causes of insanity are hereditary transmission and alco holic intemperance. No less than one-half o f all occurring cases of insanity are duo to inherited taint, one-fourtlvbf all occurring cases of mLiy i are due to drink.” insanitr ¿ ^publ IßTei ening Poet, Chicago, says of the cigarette evil: "In this section of the country this evil is worse than the alcohol habit, for it seems ac tually to threaten extermination. There are babies, two o f them only five years old, who say they have been smoking for two years, and the statement is corroborated by their elder brothers. One o f the little ones was a ponting-lipped capid but two years ago, now his tiny face is piuohed and wrinkled, and his mouth hangs loose and re laxed, like an old man’s.’ ’ In a recent article in The Inde pendent, Dr. Theo. Cuyler urges the need o f more educational work along the line o f total abstinence. H e says: "¡Social drinking customs are on the increase in our country. The decanter is stealing back again on to the dinner tablee of people from whom wo should expect bet ter things. Intoxicants »re more frequently offered at weddings and in social gatherings. Club life is becoming more popular, and there ore very few clubs that are under restrictions o f total abstinence. Betting and bottles nre the two concomitants of the football matches and rowing matches which attract thousands of out college students. T o prohibit the sale of intoxicants is bootless business as long as the use of intoxicants is on the increase. We need a tremend ous arousing of consciences all over this land to the growing lmvoc of the drink usage; the saloonkeepers nre not the only sinners; the par ents who bffer temptations to their own children and to their guests may be as guilty ns they before God. 'W oe unto him that givetb his neighbor drink, that putteth ths bottle to him and roaketb him drunken.’ Let that thunder oyer the land I” news department by selecting good, reliable correspondents in every part of Coos county, and it is our purpose to continue to make it the best family newspaper published on this west coast. We will do our best to merit the large subscrip tion patronage we already have, and we are glad to say that it is in creasing vory rapidly. Some of our old patrons are considerably in arrears, and the recent change in ownership of Mr. Dean’s half of the paper makes it necessary for ns to make collections us soon as possible. We have already stated that we put these collections in a form so as to make it easy for all subscribers by taking any market able produce, such as grain o f all kinds, potatoes, best winter appIeB, bacon, lard, poultry, etc. But we want to repeat that we will expect all of our friends to puy a part of thoir indebtedness in money. It is impossible for us to keop np our cash expenses without some cash. So we hope our staunch old patrons will save a little money for the publishers of their own paper. And please don’t wait for our busi ness manager to call on you, but now, while the roads are good, bring in your produce and money, aud you will be astonished how the H e r a l d will boom. We want a few tons of hay, and will be glad to take it on old accounts. Ed P. Cheney, living a short distance northwest of town, met with a serious aud painful accident last Thursday morning. While working on a public bridge, at the Agee place, he leaned on the banis ter a moment, when it gave way. He had been using a crowbar, and this cut through his right foot, while lie was much hurt by the fall. He was brought to town for medical attendance, and was found to bo very seriously injured. T. A. She was the child of poor peasants liviog in the suburbs of Canlon, aud was remarkable for her beauty and intelligence. When her par ents were actually starving she proposed that they should sell her for a slave. This course was fol lowed aud she becurne the property of a famous general, who was so delighted with her beauty and ready wit that he adopted her as his daughter. At Pekin she came under tbe emperor’s notice and his majesty made tbe former slave his wife. So highly did he valne her intelli gence that at his death he left her regent of the empire, and she is accredited with administering the affairs of state better than almost any of her predecessors. Her views in regnrd to the mission question in China are most sensible. Her majesty thinks that if the missionaries would interpret the teachings of Confucius in accord ance with Christian principles they would have great success among the people. But to tell the Chinese that everything they have hereto fore believed is all wrong results ¡ d Confucian worse confounded. The farmers are improving the continued good weather. Rev.
