William Mackey, au old Coast Range logger, disagrees with Pro fessor, Johnson in the latter’s state ment that the “ weeping spruce” is found only in one spot in the world, to-wit, in the Siskiyou moun tains. Mr. Mackey lias seen the tree more than once both in the Yaquina and Coos bay regions. One of them, 100 feet high, with long, slender, leaf-covered limbs dropping to the ground, he says, is a beautiful sight. C a ta rrh . E. W. Owens case, returned yesterday, only two, Alec Erickson and Mr. Jenkins, being called on to serve. The jury was selected from the first thirteen persons called. There was some thirty jurors called and as each one is entitled to one day’s fees and mileage the selection of that jury alone will cost Coos county about $280. Yesterday morning our old friend nnd fellow townsman, Uncle John Rimmer, took the train for Myrtle Point, on his accustomed trip to consult his physician, Dr. Reader. The old gentleman was feeling very poorly, being much broken down with his complaint, Bright’s disease, and had a pain in his side for some time preceding this trip. He reached his destina tion, and while setting in the hotel townrd evening, bolding converse i with acquaintances and passing persons, he suddenly gave a gasp aud sank in his chair. Capt. Len eve happened to step in: only a moment before, spoke to Uncle John, and witnessed this oceuranee. The^captain at once telephoned to friends here. His remains will be brought here and the funeral take place tomorrow on tbe arfiral -of the steamers from the upper river, under the auspices o f the Odd Fel lows, o f which order he was'an old, faithful nnd’ respected member. W e bave not much data in Uncle John Rimmer’s life. H e has been a resident iu Coos county for many years, as far bRck as the early ’70s, a quiet, penceable and lovable citi zen and neighbor. He was from Tennessee, and leaves two or three brothers in different states, a nephew, Geo. E. Rimmer, to whom he was much uttached, living at Jensen,Sebastian county, Arkansas, and probably two or three other relatives iu the Indinn territory, not fur from Fort Smith. We do not know his age, exactly, but it ; was probably 70. We shall all miss Uncle John [Rimmer. Peace to his ashes.
