Auioug certain classes, and they are by no means exclu sively the loweat, drink is the beginning and end o f everything. The very name o f liquor is held to be synonymous with enjoyment, and the dearer the liquor the snore it is priied and coveted. Yet every unto who is not a downright druukard, is well awsre that the pleas ures o f drinking are, beyond a certain point, a mockery, a delusion, aud a snare. I put it to any one who has stood half the night at a bar, or sat half the. night in a club room, driuking smoking, and bandying reckless talk, it the enjoyment o f such evening has been anything like that o f few quiet hours at home with a book or newspa per? The evil influence o f tavern pleasures on the health is too obvious to be denied by any one, and the illusorv nature o f the pleasures themselves would be undeniable also, if tho persons who indulge in them did not diceive themselves and put the truth out o f sight. No one ever brought any good out o f a drinking bout yet. It is a short, feverish spasm o f animal enjoyment, which leaves nothing but moroi>cnes8. regret, had temper; self-reproach and headache.
