o f the Radical party in violation of pledges to
conduct tbe war only for the pteser alion of
the l ni«.n and not for the subjugation of States,
or for the overthrow of freedom of speech or
tbe press. It declares that instead thereof,
tbe Radicals have established systems o f es-
piouage in disregard of hnbeae corpn» • have
made tbe national capitol a bastile, and
threaten to destroy tbe original jurisdiction ol
the Supreme Court and have maligned its
Chit! Justice becau.-e of bis integrity on the
trial of the President; recites at length these
abuses, and in conclusion declares the priv
ilege and trust of suffrage belongs exclusively
to tjie control of each State, and that Congress
has usurped it in violation of the Constitution.
Tbe platlorm further specifically denounces
tbe reconstruction acts as usurpation, uncon
stitutional and void, an 1 demands tbut the
pensions ol soldiers shall be faithfully paid,
and that the public lands should he reserved
for h< luesttads. It thanks Andrew Johbson
for resisting the aggressions of Congress, It
invites men of all parties to uuite upon this
platform.

stood half the night at a bar, or sat half

smoking, and bandying reckless talk,
it the enjoyment o f such evening has
been anything like that o f few quiet
hours at home with a book or newspa
per? The evil influence o f tavern
pleasures on the health is too obvious to
be denied by any one, and the illusorv
nature o f the pleasures themselves
would be undeniable also, if tho persons
who indulge in them did not diceive
themselves and put the truth out o f
sight.
No one ever brought any good out o f
a drinking bout yet. It is a short,
feverish spasm o f animal enjoyment,
which leaves nothing but moroi>cnes8.
