THURSDAY, APRIL », 1903. EDITORIAL. Since tbe enactment of tbe Dingley tariff, eighty-one trusts have been formed with an aggregate capital of over four billion three hundred mil lion dollars. Tbe figures are so large that tbe mind cannot conceive of their immensity, but the effect these com binations have upon the world’s business is becoming alarmingly per ceptible. Tbe Democratic party is having its woes. Tbe strains of tbe choristers •well on the breeze and float out over tbe land, bnt there is no harmony in tbe musio they are singing Discord ant tones fill tbe air and rend tbe camp asunder. Cleveland—Bryan. One faction wants to return to the dead past, aod the other to advance on progressive lines, and between the two antis no progress is possible. It is a divided house, and as consolida tion seems impossible, each faction will make a better showing if it will disconnect all alliance with the other. By so doing it would become possible to determine wbat tbe party or parties represent. A petition is being circulated here and numerously signed invoking the referendum upon tbe five hundred thousand dollar appropriation to the Lewis and Clark fair. There is con siderable opposition to such submis sion, by tbe press of tbe state, in mnny places, but we can see no rea son why such vote should not be bad. It ie very doubtful whether such ex penditure is within tbe limit of those permitted by tbe constitution, «nd (bis country, being a democratic gov ernment. wherein the majority are supposed to rule, there is no reason why the people should not be per mitted to any whether this expendi ture be made or not. Legislatures Lave a right to give away wbat be- loogs-to them, nut they can claim no such right to expend tbe people’s money outside of tbe expenditures necessary to slate organination and goverument. itted Sale ide. Allen Urquhart, an old resident of Coos County, committed suicide last Monday morning, at the residence of bis brother, Dtmcan Urqnbart, near Riverton, by shooting himself through tbe bead with a revolver. The bullet passed through tbe head causing in slant death. Deceased was unmarried and about 70 years old. He was buried next day. Curry County Recorder: Sam Vau Pelt, cruiser from tbeCbetco country, was a pleasant caller at this office Thursday. He says development work is rapidly being pushed forward, a crew of about 30 men now being employed building on the Childs A Bravo sawmill. Cbeteo, be says, is sbowiug signs of activity and every body it prospering in that vicinity. Telegram: Tbe administrator of tbe estate of a negro wbo was lynched in Champaign County, Ohio, in 1897, haa just been paid $5000 by tbe coun ty. in accordance with a law provid ing that when a person is lynched tbe county in wbiob tbe lynching occurs is liable in damages to tbe deceased’s beira. Payment was refused by tbe eoonty authorities, and the case has been in tbe courts since, all of which have decided in favor of tba law. If evary state had such a law, there wuuid bufev. lyuefi.Hg«; people would bo careful to elect Sheriffs who would protect their prisoners. —ooo----- AtwMekhwd of CsrlKfi Bflnd M obbistown , N.
