Since tbe enactment of tbe Dingley
tariff, eighty-one trusts have been
formed with an aggregate capital of
over four billion three hundred mil
lion dollars. Tbe figures are so large
that tbe mind cannot conceive of their
immensity, but the effect these com
binations have upon the world’s
business is becoming alarmingly per
ceptible.
Tbe Democratic party is having its
woes. Tbe strains of tbe choristers

tbe land, bnt there is no harmony in
tbe musio they are singing Discord
ant tones fill tbe air and rend tbe
camp asunder. Cleveland—Bryan.
One faction wants to return to the
dead past, aod the other to advance
on progressive lines, and between the
two antis no progress is possible. It
is a divided house, and as consolida
tion seems impossible, each faction
will make a better showing if it will
disconnect all alliance with the other.
By so doing it would become possible
to determine wbat tbe party or parties
represent.
A petition is being circulated here
and numerously signed invoking the
referendum upon tbe five hundred
thousand dollar appropriation to the
Lewis and Clark fair. There is con
siderable opposition to such submis
sion, by tbe press of tbe state, in
mnny places, but we can see no rea
son why such vote should not be bad.
It ie very doubtful whether such ex
penditure is within tbe limit of those
permitted by tbe constitution, «nd
