Call Dakota Whitecloud, Tribal Council Relations Coordinator, at 503-879-1309 to confirm. Kia Ora: My name is Dolores A. Parmenter, 3123. Hayu Masi to the Canoe Family: Dave, Tony, Bobby, Christy, Travis, Lisa, Chrystal, Matt, Jessie, Tamahou, Francis, Shannon, Brian, the young people and the Chinook Canoe Fam- ily. It's a big responsibility to take a group of young people and Elders on a canoe journey. These leaders are full of such love and patience. I raise my hands to you all. On my journey I met a lot of wonderful people; two of these people were our Maori pullers, Tamahou and Francis from Aotearoa. Thank you, Bobby. They spoke of their Waka and how they can navigate by the stars. Awesome! There was a young lady navigator in another group. I'm sorry, I wasn't able to speak with her. Francis shared information about their paddles and how they placed their pullers. Tamahou told me they carve masks, but they didn't wear them. Their stories are tattooed on their bod ies. They gifted an adze to Phil Red Eagle. It had a jade blade. The jade blade was shaped by hand on sandstone and water. Awesome! I would like to see that someday. Tamahou and Francis did artwork for us. Every time I saw Francis, he would be doing Maori art on scarves, our youth's arms, other Tribal people, T-shirts, our vans and trucks. Francis taught our young people a chant. Hayu Masi for the Maori paddles you gifted our Canoe Family. I can still hear their songs, see their smiles and witness their sharing of their culture with all of us and other people. I think I learned to walk in beauty, with a good heart and a good spirit, when I share my culture. Like the Maoris from Aotearoa! What an honor and a gift for you our Canoe Family. I raise my hands to Aotearoa for sending the Maori pullers, Tamahou and Francis. Tamahou and Francis will always have a place in our hearts. I witness our youth participating; they sang from their hearts and danced with poise and beauty of young eagles. These youth will be great leaders some day. They will always have a place in my heart. I am proud of all of them. Our Canoe Journey gives us many gifts: Tamahou, Francis, cultural exchange, resurgence of songs, dances, language, new friends and the generosity of our host Tribes. Hayu Masi, Suquamish. I raise my hands to you. I can still see the dancing, hear the singing and I have many memories grandmother. The Canoe Journey has touched my heart; my heart will sing forever. Hayu Masi. Dolores Parmenter Roll 3123 Tribal offices will be closing at noon Friday, Sept. 4, and be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day. Tribal offices also will be closed on Friday, Sept. 25, in observance of National Indian Day.
