Smoke Signals 5 AUGUST 15, 2009 Cultural Resources seeks plankhouse giveaway items In anticipation of an early fall opening of the Grand Ronde plankhouse, the Tribe's Cultural Resources Department is seeking donations of give away items for the planned blessing ceremony. Giveaway items can be about almost anything, including beads and blankets, but not alcohol or drugs. The items are intended to recognize people from outside the Grand Ronde community who will come for the blessing ceremony. "By having people from outside the community, they are helping to strengthen our house," said Tribal member and Cultural Resources Pro tection Coordinator Eirik Thorsgard. Giveaway items can be dropped off at the Cultural Resources Department in Grand Ronde or at the Tribal satellite offices in Eugene and Portland. An article on proper plankhouse protocol written by Cultural Resources Department staff will appear in Smoke Signals closer to the blessing ceremony. D Transportation to Grand Ronde The Portland satellite office has a transportation day to Grand Ronde once a month for medical or dental appointments or enrollment cards. Public Notice Open For Comment Public Notice for Comment on the Grand Ronde Tribe's application for 2010 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Funding. The Grand Ronde Tribe obtained a LIHEAP grant last year from the Division of Energy Assistance within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This grant program assists income eligible Tribal members with energy assistance (utility bills, fire wood, etc.), crisis energy assistance, and weatherization (e.g. furnace repair, caulking, insulation). The Tribe's LIHEAP service area includes Polk, Yamhill, Marion, Multnomah, Washington, Tillamook and Clackamas counties. If you are interested in obtaining services from the current program, please contact Social Services at 800-242-8196 for energy assistance and the Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority at 503-879-2405 for weatherization. The Tribe is taking public comment on the 2010 LIHEAP application which is to be submitted by Sept. 1, 2009. A draft will be available for review at the Planning & Grants Development Department at the Tribal Governance Center on Aug. 14, 2009. It will also be available at the Housing Authority booth at the powwow. On Sunday, Aug. 16, Grand Entry will occur at 1 p.m. Host drums will be Dlackstone and Perfect Storm, both from Can ada, and Mandaree Singers from North Dakota. There will be Spe cials with $800 first-place prizes for Women's and Men's Fancy dancers. Both categories will have four con solation prizes. Other dance categories will in clude Golden Age, Adults, Teens and HoysGirls with first-place priz es ranging from $1,100 to $150. Map created by George Valdez Powwow staff will include Master of Ceremonies Fred Hill (Umatilla), Head Judge Patricia Ike (Yakama) and Arena Director Freddie Ike Jr. (Yaka maRock Creek Wasco). Free camping will be available at the powwow grounds and a $1 or can of food donation will be re quested for parking. No canopies or umbrellas will be allowed under the powwow tent and pets, drugs and alcohol are not per mitted on the powwow grounds. For those wanting to stay at Spirit Mountain Casino, n shuttle will be available to the powwow grounds. All dancers will be required to complete tax forms and a Social Se curity number will be required. D
