2 AUGUST 15, 2009 Smoke Signals NOTICE Monthly Tribal Council Wednesday Meetings DATE TIME Wednesday, Aug. 19 5 p.m. Please note that these times and dates are subject to change if needed. Call Dakota Whitecloud, Tribal Council Relations Coordinator, at 503-879-1309 to confirm. General Council meeting Sunday, Sept. 13 11 a.m. Tribal Community Center Dear Smoke Signals: I want to thank everyone for all the prayers in my behalf during my recent illness. The thoughtfulness was appreciated by my family and me very much. I believe the prayers played a big part in my rapid recovery. KANAWI NAYKA TILIXUM (all my relation) Peace, Beryle Contreras Roll 384 Dear Tribal membership: This year, it has been decided that candidates who are running for Tribal Council are required to go through a mailing service to send out their cam paign materials. It has been less than convenient. I know one candidate that was at the mailing service the day after nomina tions wishing to have his letter sent. The letter was not sent until three days later. People in California, Washington and North Carolina got it three and four weeks later and our family members in Georgia have yet to receive it. In any election, timing is very important. This same candidate had a com pleted post card sit at the mailing company for a week and-a-half as they had to wait until there were enough printing jobs to batch together. This same person was not informed by the mailing company that he could have a return address on the envelope. Later to find out after spending $1,700 for that mail-out that adding a return address was an option and the lack of information was a mistake made by the representative of the mailing service. I'd like to add that without the return address, it appeared to be "junk mail" or an unwanted advertisement. It is something we (including Tribal Council) should all be thinking about. This particular candidate spent several thousands of dollars for mail-outs that have still not reached their destination and maybe never will. If you were running for Tribal Council and were depending on a mailing company to provide a service that would assist you in your campaign, how confident and trusting would you be? It is very likely that after having spent a great deal of money on campaign materials, the membership may not receive them before the election is over, if they receive them at all. Respectfully, Joann Mercier Roll 546 Corrections: In the Aug. 1 issue of Smoke Signals, the story, "Grand Ronde area swimming holes," requires an update and a correction. The property holding the "Little Hawaii" swimming hole has recently been sold by Stimson Lumber to Hancock Forest Management and the swim ming hole is now closed to the public, according to Polk County Forestry officer Shane Zook. And the swimming hole labeled St. Johns Falls in the story is actually Jahn's Falls, according to Glennys Wright, daughter of Otto Jahn, the farmer who once owned the property. "I learned to swim in that hole," Wright, 78, said, "and we never did have a saint there." Smoke Signals regrets the errors.
