Smoke Signals 5 APRIL 1,2007 Tribal Members Brayden And Bryanna Langley Place In World Elk Contests Third and sixth graders have grown up in a hunting family. By Ron Karten Tribal member Brayden Langley, 8, placed 5th at the World Elk Call ing Championships in Reno, Ne vada on February 24th. His sister, also a Tribal member, Bryanna, 12, placed 3rd in the Daisy Outdoor es say contest with her essay on "Take Aim At Safety." The events were sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Daisy. This is the second year in a row that Bryanna has placed in the top five in the essay contest. And last year, Brayden finished first in a local Elk Calling competition. The two have been involved with hunting their whole lives, just as their dad Bryan Langly, Tribal member and Education Depart ment Specialist, and grandpa Dale Langley, Tribal Elder, have been involved their whole lives. This year, Bryanna is old enough to hunt and will be out with Bryan and the family to take on the wild life. And Brayden, who is not yet old enough to hunt is going nuts with the injustice of it all. Still, Brayden does participate during his dad's hunting trips. "He likes to bring along his bow or his BB gun to shoot," said Bryan. He also enjoys practicing elk calls. "He practiced every day for the Reno competition, but he could only practice in his room because he would drive ev eryone nuts," said Bryan. "He loves to call." Still, the competi tion was rough for Brayden. "Actually, even af ter winning he was bummed because he did not win it all," said Bryan. "He is a competitor. He was also bummed be cause he was in 3rd place at the prelimi naries. His favorite reed ripped and he could not use it, so he had to use a new reed." The day turned out to be all for the kids. The Langley fam ily went to the com petition with their friends, the Lee family, where both of the Lee boys placed in their first time out, but not so for the folks. "The other boys' dad, Jim Lee, called in the men's division and did not advance to the finals," said Bryan. "This was his first time call ing at a competition. I called in the professional division representing Jones Calls, but did not advance to the finals." H A Brayden's Langley's friends: Ryan Lee, left, placed second in the Pee Wee Division (the same division Brayden middle, competed in) Nathan Lee, placed 5th in the Youth Division.
