12 JULY 1,2006 Smoke Signals Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority Native American Housing-To-Homeownership Fair July 29 The Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA Family Center) announces Portland's first Native American Housing-to-Hom-eownership Fair. The event will be held on Saturday, July 29, from 10 a.m. -3 p.m. in the Mount Tabor Hall at Portland Community College S.K. Center, 2305 S.E. 82nd Ave and Division, Portland OR 97216. The Native American Housing-to-Homeownership Fair is free and open to everyone. Participants will meet housing resource professionals, lenders and may be eligible to enter to win $1,500 in down payment assistance. Classes, homebuyer assistance information and housing resources for renters with home ownership goals will be offered. Fea tures include Native American dance performances, a guest drum, food, Kids' Corner and raffle prizes. The fair is offered in response to community need and as part of NAYA Family Center's goal of increasing economic and housing stability in the American IndianAlaska Native Community. The fair will provide a wide range of resources for the whole community: from renters to potential home owners. In comparison to populations of similar size, only 17 percent of Portland's 38,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives own their home (Northwest Area Foundation). This event is coordinated by the NAYA Family Center in collabo ration with the Bureau of Housing and Community Development, Portland Development Commission, The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, US Bank, Albina Community Bank, The State of Or egon, The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, Portland Community Land Trust, Housing Connections & 211 Info, HOST Development Inc., The Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, The Coquille Indian Tribe, Home 123, Portland Habitat for Humanity, Portland Housing Center, Key Bank, Northwest Housing Alternatives, Columbian Non-profit Housing, Cascade Residential Mortgage and other partners. The five-bedroom unit, and additional lower rent units with fewer amenities will have rents published next month. NEW Chxi Musam Illihi Low-Income Rentals Low-income families will also have 36 more rental units available from 1 to 5 bedroom size, upon the completion of this new phase of family housing development in late 2006. Rents for these units will be 30 of adjusted household income, and income limits apply. Call the Housing Authority for an application that will place you on the waiting list. Tribal Housing Offers Trainings & Financial Skills Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority is pleased to be able to offer Homebuyer Trainings and Financial Skills classes to Tribal members. Financial Skills Trainings consist of four 2-hour class sessions and will be held on the following schedule: Fridays: July 7, 14, 21, 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesdays: September 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays: October 31, Nov. 7, 14, 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. . The above classes will be held at the Housing Authority. Homebuyer Training consists of three 3-hour class sessions and will be held on the following schedule: Tuesdays: July 11, 18, 25, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays: September 12, 19, 26, from 9 a.m. to noon.
