It was the kickoff of the state's Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commemoration, and hot on its heels on Tuesday, February 15, it was Native American Day. The moment called for the ulti mate in legislative pomp and cer emony, a joint session of the Legis lature bringing together House and Senate members. It was a time when no state business was at tempted. It was a time to honor the past. New Business Grand Ronde Tribal member and Veteran Steve Rife leads the Grand Ronde Honor Guard in posting the colors at a joint session of the State Legisla ture at the capitol on Febru ary 14. The joint session honored the kickoff of the state's Lewis & Clark Commemoration and prefaced by a day the Legislature's commemora tion of its Indian heritage with Native American Day. I! Chemawa Pow-wow Celebrates The School's 125th Birthday Nearly 300 filled the gym for the event. By Ron Karten Bonner Moses (Muckleshoot) came from Klamath Falls to learn to make regalia from her sister. You could see the success of the mission on her children, Silver, 7, and Nyah, 6, and her nephew, Ace, 2, decked out and dancing at the Chemawa Indian School's 125th Birthday pow-wow. Two to three hundred enjoyed the traditional pow-wow at the Chemawa gymnasium on a beau tiful day toward the end of Febru ary. The sun was out and the doors were open. Among those enjoying the day at Chemawa were Grand Ronde Tribal Elders Kathryn Harrison, Norma Lee, Cheri Butler and Beryle Contreras. "We're alumni from there," said Harrison.
