Nuhau (Greetings) People of the Grand Ronde Tribe, I have to write with you to let you know how much I enjoy and appreciate your newspaper "Smoke Signals." I received a card from my youngest daughter "Myla Wind Horse" recently. I had not heard from her for 7 years. I could not read it for a while as my eyes were filled with much water. I have not yet answered as I have so many times in my mind, it is just a jumble. I will write to her. I had asked if you would send your newspaper to her and my daughter who lives now in France. If you send your newspaper it may let her know she is an Indian girl and not writing to me is not our way-whatever is the reason. I thank you and especially our "Grandfather" who helps us in so many ways. Sincerely, Tay Che Kay Lab. Hello, I am writing this letter to Smoke Signals to voice an ethical concern in re gards to the recall for one of our elected Tribal Council members. I am not defending nor condemning the petition, but feel that members who do not live in the Grand Ronde area and are not able to attend the council meetings and func tions that take place at the Tribal offices and casino should not sign a petition out of lack of knowledge of what actually takes place. Tribal members that cannot attend meetings and get involved in the Tribal functions should not voice a yes or no answer on hearsay and feel they have made the right decision. I have received two letters about a recall issue, one from the person that initiated the petition and one from the council member being recalled. I have not met either of these people, so it would be unfair for me to sign the petition. I feel if there is a problem with a council member and it has been brought to the council's atten tion, the council should investigate the circumstances and handle it as deemed necessary. If council does not address the complaint, that's when an ethics committee, which should be made up of several Tribal members that are active in Tribal meetings and attend Tribal functions, should take over. Geographically, I am not able to attend meetings or functions of the Tribe, but I am sure there are Tribal members who do attend or could attend if asked. I want to thank Smoke Signals for us who live outside the tri city area who feel that something isn't right to write and voice our feelings to the rest of the Tribal members. This is the first time I have written to the paper and I felt compelled to write so those that cannot be a part of what takes place in Grand Ronde will think of their situation before signing something they are not truly knowlegeable about.
