'l I Elder of the Month Verna Larsen close to Tribe Verna Larsen, daugh ter of Lena (Norwest) Bobb and Lewis Riggs, Sr., granddaughter of Umpqua Chief Solomon Riggs, was born in Grand Rondeon July 8, 1916, where she has lived most of her life. Happy Memories: While growing up in Grand Ronde, there were occasions to visit with Grandpa and Grandma Norwest on their farm a few miles from Spirit . Mountain. Juanita Curl, a cousin about Verna's age, was a good playmate and they really had a good time! Before becoming a teenager, she went to school at Klamath Agency, a boarding school for Indian children. Verna also at tended Chemawa, where she graduated from high school. After SchOOl Club begins October 9, 1995. It will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on every Monday and Friday that school is in session. They all live within 30 miles, or less, of Grand Ronde. So far, there are 1 1 grand children, four step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. mm b Veterans: Remember your blanket The Tribe honored all tribal veterans with a Pendleton blanket at this year's Pow-wow. If you were not present at the Pow-wow to receive your blanket, it's not too late to pick it up. Distribution of the blankets will end on December 31, 1995, so you must act now! He was actually a member of the Long Tom Calapuyas, and later in life became a chief of the Mary's River.
