Education Update In closing Fall term 1992, the Tribal Education Program faced difficult times in assisting HIGHER EDUCATION and ADULT VOCATIONAL EDUCATION TRAINING students. For the first time in seven years, the program had to place students on a waiting list, due to lack of funds and high student enrollment. Some students who submitted their applications in at the last minute found there were more tribal members vying for financial assistance than there were funds available. Projections indicate that this trend will continue into the next school year of 1993-94. Because of high enrollment and limited funds, we are asking all continuing Higher Education and A VT students who will be attending school in 1993-94 to file your FINANCIAL AID FORMS early! We will set a priority for funding those students who submit verification of filing FAFs by February 15, 1993. All students need to be aware that Congress has changed PELL grant eligibility. It is now easier for middle income students to qualify for Pell Grants in 1993-94. However, no additional funding was added to the Pell Grant line, therefore more students will beeligiblefor Pell assistance. This means federal and campus based financial aid may be depleted early. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS, NEVVOR CONTINUING, FILE THEIR FAFs NO LATER THAN JANUARY 29, 1993. You may be eligible for maximum financial aid but not get it if you don't file early. Family MathFamily Science Classes Continue Family MathFamily Science classes are fun-fun-fun! Come and be a part of the action while we learn about math and science through teaching and activities. During this past year some classes included making balloon baskets, designing graham cracker houses, making spider webs, static electricity experiments, quality control checks on M&M packages, and finding our body type and charting probability sheets. Classes will be held twice monthly this coming year with lots of new activities and surprises. The first classes will be January 8 and 29 from 5:30 to 6:30 at the Community Center. A light dinner will be served. Transportation will be provided for the Bunnsville area students and parents. Tribal Employee Earns Degree By Chris Leno I have spent the past four plus years of my life completing a Bachelor of Science degree at Oregon State University in Corvallis. My degree is in Business Administration. I focused on Marketing Management, with a Behavioral Science minor. I finished my education with a cumulative grade point average of 3.05. I am currently employed with Spirit Mountain Development Corporation as the Business development Analyst. I am very grateful for the opportunity to prove my abilities coming right our of college. My long range goal is to continue on with my current position, do whatever I can to help the Tribe, and to show my appreciation for the assistance I received while completing my education. Finally, one day, I would like to become general Manager of the corporation. ' - " Receiving my degree from OSU was a very big accomplishment in my mind, but may not have been possible without the support of people around me. I would like to thank all of my family and friends who have been tremendously supportive over the past four years. Also, I would like to thank the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, specifically Dean Azule and the Education Program for their financial and technical assistance. And continuing hopefully for some years to come, I would like to thank the Tribe and Spirit Mountain development corporation for giving me a chance to put back into the tribe some of what I have gotten out of it. Although I may pursue a Master's degree in the near future, I must say it is nice to be finished with school for a while. HEAD START Open House You're invited to join us in celebrating our move from the Tribal Community center to the Rowan House, which is located behind the tribal Alcohol & Drug Program facilities. The Head Start Program and the tribal Pre-School Child Care Program will be housed in this facility. Open House activities will be held from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. January 29, 1993. Vocational Career Day to Be Held OnJanuary28, 1993,theTribaleducationPrograms willsponsoraCareerDayforVOCATIONAL&TRAINING PROGRAMS. The workshop will feature vocational programs that are offered at local community colleges, as well as programs from proprietary schools such as Trend Business College, West Coast Training, Western Medical College, Chemeketa Community College, Western Culinary Institute, Institute of American Indian Arts, Southwestern Indian Polytechnical Institution, and the International Air Academy. We encourage anyone to attend this workshop if interested in pursuing vocational programs. This workshop will fun from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Thursday, January 28, 1 993. Congratulations Eugene Title V Program At the 24th annual National Indian Education Association convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Title V Indian Education Program of Eugene, Oregon was recognized as one often exemplary programs nationwide. Dr. Twila Souers received a certificate of recognition from the U. S. Department of education, Office of Indian Education Programs. Members of the Oregon Caucus are: Marie Schmidt. Jim Thornton, Irene Towe, and LaVonne Edmo. They were on hand to congratulate Dr. Souers. y j Wis, 1 f Dr. Souer displays the Title V award. Child Care Program The Education Department is recruiting children for the school age child Care program. This program is scheduled to begin in January 1993 and will provide supervision before school, 7:00 A.M. to 7:45 A.M. and after school, 2:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. for children K-8th grades in the grand Ronde Elementary School. The parents must be working or in some type of training or schooling and have an income that falls within the following guidelines: Family of 2 1,776.00 Family of 6 3,061.00 Family of 32,088.00 Family of 73,448.00 Family of 42,290.00 Family of 83,883.00 Family of 5 2,675.00 The coordinator is Rochelle Andrews, who will provide a variety of games, activities, snacks, and cultural enrichment through dance, crafts, and stories.
