Smoke Signals January 1993 Page 3 Grand Ronde Christmas Light Dedications In December, the Grand Ronde Tribe held a tree-lighting ceremony at the Tribal Community Center to help raise money for the Elders' Committee. A light on the tree could be purchased for one dollar in the name of someone else. The person could be a friend, family member, new birth, or to honor the memory of a love one who has passed on. The Wellness Component Staff are: Elaine Smith, Shelly Kent, and Mark Cook, Senior Services. They provide nutrition information and meals and transportation for our elders three days per week at the Senior Mealsite in Grand Ronde. Vernon Kennedy and Camille VanVleet (January through August) have provided substance abuse prevention activities and education the tribal service area, including the New year Sober Dance, Graduation Honor Pow-wow, Sober Dance at Grand Ronde Pow-wow, Women's Softball tournament and other events. Linda Smith, Jim Holmes, and Bonnie Martin have provided medical transports, home visits for follow-up from medical providers and assessments, educational information to small and large groups, and blood pressure screening. Wellness activities include Fun RunWalk for health, nutrition picnic, Christmas tree Lighting, skating for children and exercise classes. They have helped the Tribal council and Pow-wow committee with Christmas Party, Summer Camp, Elder's Mealsite menu, and other events. A special thank you to all the people who volunteered their time in 1992 to help make wellness activities possible.
