Smoke Signals June 1992 Page 2 TRIBAL ELECTIONS INFORMATION WHO MAY VOTE: Any enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon who will be 18 years of age or older on the date of the scheduled Tribal Council elections. APPLICATIONS FOR ABSENTEE BALLOTS: Each person applying for an absentee ballot must fill out and sign an appli cation form. Application forms shall be available at the Grand Ronde Tribal Offices in Grand Ronde. The application forms may also be requested from the Election Board. No request for an appli cation shall be valid after 5:00 P.M. on the last working day prior to the election. DATE AND LOCATION OF ELECTIONS: The Tribal Council Elections will be held Saturday, September 12, 1992, at the new Tribal Offices in Grand Ronde. Larsen Co-Chairperson On May 7, 1992, we had the monthly meeting of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde (NIVA) Chapter. We discussed the need to identify the veterans of our tribe and community. Congratulations and thanks to you Scott We'd also like to thank Chuck Quenelle and Mark Dolan (Dale Langley's son in law) for their drawings. We will be drafting our chapter policies and going over them at our June meeting. They will cover the chapter's responsibilities and duties. Lydia Mathena will be setting up a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) seminar in late August. We will notify everyone of the date, time, and place. Our next meeting will be June 4, 1992 at 6:30 ?M . in the tribal council chambers. SURVIVAL ON SAFETY The first annual "Survival on Safety", a camp designed to promote safety education and injury prevention among tribal youth ages 10 to 15 years, will be held on the Chemawa Indian High School campus in Salem from June 28 to July 2, 1992. The camp is coordinated by the Chemawa Indian Health Center and hosted jointly with local tribes. Highlights of the camp include basis water and small boat safety, general home safety, child care and baby-sitting, bike safety, gun safety, fire safety and IMMUNIZATION CLINIC AND DENTAL SCREENINGS An immunization clinic, sponsored by the Grand Ronde Health Depart ment, will be held in Portland on June 23, 1992 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 P.M.. The clinic will be held at the Siletz, Portland Office on 1718 N.E. 82nd. The purpose of the immunization clinic is to be sure that tribal children are adequately immunized. There will be no charge for the immunizations. In addition, Tammy McClung, tribal dentist, will be available to do dental screening and answer any questions. All members are invited to drop by, even if you up-to-date on immuniza tions, to meet the staff. For further information, call Linda Smith or Bonnie Martin at 1-800-422-0232. Vernon Kennedy lost his light blue Jacket at the Community Center iGrand Opening on April 1 5, 1 992. He would like it returned. basic first aid. In addition, CPR and first aid certification by the American Red Cross will be offered to eligible participants. Other activities include swimming, self-esteem building and traditional Indian dancing and stories. All interested persons should contract their local tribes for registration packets or call the Chemawa Indian Health Center at 1-800-452-7823 and speak with the Field Health Department for more information.
