a Tribal Election News P. 2 Youth Practicum P. 5 Job Opportunities P. 7 Smoke 5igs THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE GRAND RONDE COMMUNITY OF OREGON & JUNE 1992 TRIBE HOSTS WELLNESS AND SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE The Grand Ronde Tribal Health Department is sponsoring a "Walk in Balance: Wellness & Spirituality" conference on June 15-17, 1992 at the Red Lion Inn -Jantzen Beach in Portland, Oregon. The conference will include a variety of activities including workshops, speakers, recreational activities and a pow-wow. Some of the presentations and speakers include: "Traditions and the Cradleboard" by Grand Ronde Tribal member Cecile Kneeland; Tradition and Religious Rights by Al Smith, Klamath; Native American Recovery Issues; Parenting, Prevention and Intervention by John Spence, Gros-Ventre; Women's Issues: Traditional Beliefs and Medicines by Prunie Williams, Warm Springs; Spirituality and Mental Health and Spirituality by Sharyne Shiu Thornton, CherokeeChinese; Unity and Diversity by John Eagle Day, Shoshone Bannock; "The Inner Child" by Billy Rogers, Kiowa, and a presentation on "Traditional Ways and Story Telling by Paul Ortega. The pow wow will be held June 16, 1992 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The registration fee for the conference is $45.00. for more information contact the Tribal Health Depart ment at 879-5211. TRIBAL COUNCIL SCHEDULES PUBLIC HEARING ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES The Tribal Council for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde is holding a public comment period on community substance abuse. The comment period will include a public hearing on June 18, 1992, begin ning at 5:00 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center. Written comments will be accepted to June 25, 1992. The Tribal Council is interested in community input on substance abuse and its impact on programs and services the Tribe provides. The Council is reviewing the necessity of expanding its current Tribal Drug Free Workplace Policy, which involves drug testing only under certain circumstances, to a random program. Written comments must be signed and can be submitted to Jackie Whisler, co Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, 9615 Grand Ronde Road, Grand Ronde, Oregon 97347.
