ADULT VOCATIONAL TRAINING The AVT program provides for vocational counseling or guidance, institutional training in any vocational or trade school, apprenticeship and on-the-job training. The Vocational Training program is primarily for adult tribal member who reside within the six county service area, 18 years to 35 years old, but high school graduates can be eligible at 17. Persons over 35 shall be eligible assuming training and permanent employment to be otherwise feasible in terms of health and physical capibillty. An application for training services may be approved within the limitation of available funds, when it is determined that the applicant is in need of such training in order to obtain reasonable and satisfactory employment, and that it is feasible for himher to pursue such training. Reasonable and satisfactory employment is employment that provides: A) Sufficient income for individual or family unit to line at a economic level considered as adequate in the community; and B) Opportunity for advancement on the basis of skill and experience acquired in the course of employment. Remember the tribe has applied for limited funds at this time and if you are interested be sure to contact Don Hudson at the Tribal Office. HIGHER EDUCATION The Bureau of Indian Affairs encourages Indian students to continue their education and training beyond high school for the purpose of developing leadership and increasing employment opportunities in professional and vocational fields. The program authorizes assistance to Indians seeking Higher Education. The tribe has submitted a proposal to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for limited funds to administrate a Higher Education program. All interested tribal members one fourth or more blood degree are encouraged to apply. The tribe encourages qualified Indian students and adults seeking Higher Education to apply. Funds are used to aid Indian students who are in financial need after other sources of funds are applied. Bureau Scholarship Grants serve as the primary source of aid for the majority of Indian students desiring Higher Education but are unable to finance the same. Indian students are expected to take advantage of institution sponsored financial aid programs, such as the assistance provided by matching fund aggreement with the U.S. Office of Education (DHEW) Grant funds may be used for tuition, subsistence, required fees, textbooks, and miscellaneous expenses related to attendance at college. Funds are to be used to assist students pursuing regular accredited college courses, required in the achievment of a college degree. Grants are applicable for students who are one fourth or more degree, who are a member of Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university; and who have a definite financial need.
