Spily^y Tym oo, W arm Springs, Oregon February 19, 2014- Page 3 Artist journeys to New Zealand gathering L illian Pitt returned recendy from a two-week artists’ gath ering in New Zealand. The artists were from indigenous cultures o f thé Pacific Rim, including Canada, the United States, Samoa, Australia and New Zealand. Lillian took part in print making and ceramics. “They built a kiln of sod, which was very interesting,” she said. Lillian works mainly as a sculptor and mixed media art ist. She is known nationally and internationally, and is the. re c ip ie n t o f m any artists awards. A m em ber o f the C o n fed e rate d T ribes, she now lives in Portland. L illian w en t to N ew Zealand in January to attend the Kokiri Putahi 2014 G ath ering o f International Indig enous Visual Artists. This was the seventh annual such gathering. Lillian has attended three o f them, including the first, and the most recent one last month. H osts o f the event were the Maori, so Lillian was fa miliar with some o f the hosts. A few years ago a group of They were great hosts at the Indigenous Artists gath ering last month. “They had tents set up where we could work,” Lillian said. “They fed us and housed, and gave us the clay to work with.” The gathering concluded With a festival and exhibition o f th e a rtw o rk they p r o duced. Attendance was esti mated at 40,000 people. As stated by the Toi Maori Aotearoa organization: “Maori art is inseparable from Maori cul ture. It is like a living organism that exists in the spirit of our people and drives them towards wider horizons and greater achievement. ” The' sim ilarity to W arm Springs culture, and o th er Native cultures o f the Pacific rim, is clear by that statement. As part o f her visit, Lillian gave a 40-minute Power Point presentation on the history, culture and Native people o f the Pacific Northwest. “I talked o f the Colum bia River gorge, and o f fish ing as our way o f life,” she said. — Dave McMechan Lillian (front row near the center) with some of the other artists at the gathering; and at right working with one of her favorite media, clay.
