Artist journeys to New Zealand gathering
L illian Pitt returned recendy
from a two-week artists’ gath
ering in New Zealand. The
artists were from indigenous
cultures o f thé Pacific Rim,
including Canada, the United
States, Samoa, Australia and
New Zealand.
Lillian took part in print
making and ceramics. “They
built a kiln of sod, which was
very interesting,” she said.
Lillian works mainly as a
sculptor and mixed media art
ist. She is known nationally
and internationally, and is the.
re c ip ie n t o f m any artists
awards. A m em ber o f the

now lives in Portland.
L illian w en t to N ew
Zealand in January to attend
the Kokiri Putahi 2014 G ath
ering o f International Indig
enous Visual Artists. This
was the seventh annual such
gathering. Lillian has attended
three o f them, including the
first, and the most recent one
last month.
H osts o f the event were
the Maori, so Lillian was fa
miliar with some o f the hosts.
A few years ago a group of
They were great hosts at
the Indigenous Artists gath
ering last month. “They had
tents set up where we could
work,” Lillian said. “They fed
us and housed, and gave us
the clay to work with.”
The gathering concluded
With a festival and exhibition

duced. Attendance was esti
mated at 40,000 people.
As stated by the Toi Maori
Aotearoa organization: “Maori
art is inseparable from Maori cul
ture. It is like a living organism
that exists in the spirit of our
people and drives them
towards wider horizons and greater
achievement. ”
The' sim ilarity to W arm
Springs culture, and o th er
Native cultures o f the Pacific
rim, is clear by that statement.
As part o f her visit, Lillian
gave a 40-minute Power Point
presentation on the history,
culture and Native people o f
the Pacific Northwest.
“I talked o f the Colum
bia River gorge, and o f fish
ing as our way o f life,” she
said.
