Indian Business Talk Approaches to business, personal problem solving By Bruce Engle Eoan officer W.S. Credit Enterprise I started writing this for business readers because busi ness is all a b o u t p ro b lem solving— regarding custom ers, employees, and owners— and sometimes for lenders. T he general principles can apply to solving p erso n al problems as well. I recom m end learning the basic lessons before going into business. Cash manage m ent might be one o f those. Transitioning from maybe no record keeping to shoe- box record keeping and then to com puter record keeping could be another. S om e p ro b le m s are simple; others are not. A first task is to know exacdy w hat the problem is. Is it really a problem ? Why, for w hom , and how? B usiness p ro b lem s can ( '' ! Usually be categorized as per taining to Production, Pur chasing, Marketing, Person nel, and Finance. A problem often affects more than just one o f the areas. O ur own personal prob lems can often be categorized similarly. Clarity is important. Con fusion begets disaster. Poorly understood problem s often give birth to unworkable so lutions. Hysteria, real or imag ined, can co ntam inate the process. There may be m ore than one problem, one m ethod o f determining the solution, or one solution. For example, a couple is sues ago I m entioned a way o f multiplying two-digit num bers by eleven. The m ethod was to add from left to right instead o f multiplying. You can do that in your head. Q uick accurate solutions are im portant w hen time is money. D oing the math on paper required seven steps— n ot counting finding.pap'er, pen cil, and a place to write. D o ing it in your head required only three^—unless you had to “ carry” a n u m b er in your head. Som e p ro b lem s can be solved just by thinking them through; others may require less thinking and more “do ing.” Being good at both is helpful. Exam ple — consider the classic “D eterm ine how to end up with four gallons o f water in a jar if all you have to w ork w ith are a five gallon jar, a three gallon jar, and an unlimited supply o f water.” One solution is to keep fill ing, transferring, and empty ing the jars until you discover the possible methods. H in t- you can start by filling either jar. T hat’s a “doing” method. T here is another way to solve the problem. I blam e/ credit D ereke for pointing it out to me. I p osed the problem as stated above. H e solved it in his head in about five seconds. His m ath was half o f five (2 Yd) plus half o f three (1 Yd) makes 4 gallons. His suggested “m ethod” was to fill each jar half full. I w easeled fast. I h ad stated the problem correctly but neglected to tell him that the jars weren’t marked as to graduated amounts. Oops. I expected him to use ad dition and subtraction. His m ethod was division in his head instead. Neatly done, Dereke. A conclusion might be that two heads are better than one. A nother could be that alter natives are often w orth con sidering and sometimes con tribute to better m ethods and solutions.
