Everyone is invited. Din n e r w ill b egin at 5 p,m ., storytelling starting at 6:30 p.m. Please bring your own chair for the storytelling ses sion. The dinner and storytelling are sponsored by the Oregon H ealth Authority, the state Office o f Equity and Inclu sion, and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. H ead cook will be Myra J. The Canôe Family will be gin gathering at the longhouse in the afternoon. There will be a m eet and greet with the family starting around 4:30 p.m. The evening will include a p resentation by the Canoe Family. The focus o f this gather ing is community health. This is an in tro d u c tio n to the storytelling project, which will continue in January and Feb ruary. E vent, organizers w ould like to have youth and other artists provide a mural that captures the stories, activities and ideas of stories. T his will be the fourth Leadership Program class. T h e F o rd In s titu te for C om m unity Building p ro motes vitality in rural com munities as part o f The Ford Family Foundation, based in Roseburg. The Leadership Develop ment training consists o f 48 class hours held over four Friday—Saturday sessions, spread out on a monthly ba sis. The classes focus on de veloping the community lead ership capacity o f individu als. The Institute covers the cost o f the program and ma terials, and provides food and beverages. Participants are re sponsible for travel' to and from the trainings. The training emphasizes an in teractive and facilitative style rather than lectures. It draws on the knowledge and skills o f those in the room , augmented by the lessons in the curriculum. A typical class consists o f about 25 individuals— high school students to retired se niors— with leadership expe rience ranging from emerg ing to seasoned. This training is designed for a diverse mix o f citizens representing busi ness, governm ent and n o n profit sectors. Curriculum concepts in clude: Community capacity' and social capital; personality types and leadership styles; c o m m u n ity d e v e lo p m e n t models. Also: The Catalytic Leadership Model; asset mapping, group d ev elo p m en t; m odels, for group decision-making; .com m unication strategies, and volunteerism. Each class selects a project that they w ork on together; for example, a local park im provem ent. The project helps focus the course, c o n te n t on a real- wo.rld situation. The Institute provides up to a $5,000 match in support o f the project. Participants are expected to volunteer outside the class to complete the project within one year. C om m unity C ounseling had a sim ilar p ro b lem on Monday but was back open on Tuesday. The Early Childhood Edu cation C enter had to close during the early part o f the week because o f broken wa ter pipes and no heat in some rooms. Klamath task force reaches water agreement (AP) - Ranchers and the K lam ath Tribes signed a teritative deal last week in Klamath Falls for sharing- w ater in th e d ro u g h t- stricken U pper K lam ath Basin. The rest o f a special task force on water issues were to join them Tuesday at the Oregon Institute o f Tech nology to announce the 17- page agreem ent in p rin ciple. Their goal is to reach a final agreement early next year that will guide legisla tion to be . offered by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden to break a logjam in Congress over resolving Klam ath water battles. Republicans in the H ouse have blocked legis lation to implement exist ing agreements to remove four dams from the Kla math River to help strug gling salmon runs, restore e n v iro n m e n ta l dam age from a century o f irriga tion developm ent in the Klamath Basin, and p ro vide a higher level o f cer tainty for farmers on a fed eral irrigation project strad dling the Oregon-Califor nia border that has had to shut o ff services to con serve water for protected fish. M eanw hile, th e 509-J school district announced clo sures on Monday and Tues day. Problems for the schools included broken water pipes, and also problems with some o f the bus routes.
