Spilyqy Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon Developer proposes solar project in W.S. Tribal officials are discuss ing the possibility o f a solar energy development project on the reservation. A d ev elo p e r has ap proached the tribe about de veloping a 300-kilowatt solar project on a two-acre parcel near the C redit enterprise building. The developer would lease the property for a fee paid to the tribes. The developer w ould sell the energy to a power company. The developer would re ceive a tax credit fo r this project. After 15 years, the tribes would become the owners o f the facilities, and could use the power to off-set energy costs at the adm inistration building, said Jim M anion, manager o f Power and Wa ter Enterprises. The tribes are not consid ering developing this project on its own, Manion said, be cause the tribes have no fed eral tax liability. So there is no tax incentive for the tribes, he said. The private developer on Page 3 September 18, 2013 the other hand has the incen tiv e to p ro c e e d w ith th e project, and the tribes could also see a b enefit through lease payments, and owner ship after 15 years. New technology would be involved in the solar energy farm. A robotic device would monitor the solar cells, direct ing to the best configuration for maximum solar exposure. As stated in the project description: “The developer will main tain the panels and will train personnèl to take over main ten an c e. T h e p an els are placed on a railing system and a robot will travel along the rail to adjust each panel for angle and direction.” This project is in the com m ent period, and is pending before the Land Use Com mittee. A description would also be submitted to the Inte g rated R eso u rce M anage m e n t P lan (IRM P) team , Manion said. A rt premier at casino Indian H ead Casino will host an art premier in O ctober featuring the work o f Byron Kalama. The exhibit will be in the Salmon King Shop at the casino. The premier re c ep tio n is from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, O ct. 4. There will be music by local artists. Kalama was inspired in his art by the basketry and beadwork he saw as a youth. “I am also a clothing printer and cus tom designer,” he said. The deadline to subm it aft for judging will be Friday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. The dead line to submit art for display purposes is Friday, p e t. 4 at Warm Springs Fire and Safety responded last week to a fire that consumed a shed structure by a residence in the Sunnyside neighborhood.
