P ro te s te rs \ s to o d in th e Z Spilyay ra in O utside Speaks th e stad iu m <__________ > with signs say ing “Redskins re f e r to th e scalps o f my ancestors” and “the R-word is — to the N - word.” A lth o u g h the R edskins team ow ner D aniel Snyder has vowed to never change their name, here in Oregon Gov. K itzh ab e r vow ed to change all Native American team names by vetoing a bill that would allow some teams to keep their names if local tribes approved. So startin g in 2017 no Native American mascots or names will be allowed in pub lic schools. My th o u g h ts are th a t team s and m ascots should n ot refer to any person or group o f people, not neces sarily because the names and images are offensive (but be lieve me some o f them are), but because people are pas sionate about their teams and love to show their team spirit. You . know you are going to cheer y o u r team on and you want them to “stom p” their opponent. W hen your team is running up the sfefe' they tire “killing” the oppos ing team. Well w hen the opposing team refers to a group o f people hmmm... let’s say “The Indians” then team spirit turns into racist slurs. D uring Homecom ing and Spirit Week across the county the whole point is you want your team to crush the rival. You decorate the halls, make posters, and dress up to show your spirit. B ut if your rival team is “The Indians’’ then the halls that our children walk in say th in g s like “W e’re g o n n a stomp the Indians,” or maybe even “massacre the Indians,” with a picture o f our mascot scalping their mascot. These types o f things are n ot okay. I am all for team spirit, so just take the references to people out o f it, because no body seems to m ind if there is a noose around a D uck’s neck during Civil War week. Spilyay Tyrooo September 18, 2013 including tribal language, as th e Language P ro g ram is unable to provide teachers due to conflicts with the im m ersion classes and other language p rogram obliga tions. H ow ever, th e C ultural teaching will continue, and Parole and Probation will be expanding these services to include providing classes to inmates in our tribal jail. O n Mondays from 3 to 4 p.m., Cultural Classes will be held for the male population at the Warm Springs Correc tional Facility (WSCF). O n Tuesdays from 9 to 10 a.m., Cultural Classes will be held for the female popu lation at WSCF. Then on Wednesday, Cul ture Class will be held at the Tribal Parole and Probation office from 3 to 4 p.m. Leona Ike, director, Pa role and Probation. Museum event The Huckleberry Harvest, Gathering by the Creek, is set for O ctober 5. The Huckleberry Harvest will be held at the Museum at Warm Springs, where you w ill b e im m e rse d in th e beauty o f the culture and tra ditions o f our tribes... with the m esm erizing beat o f a drum as it echoes through the basalt rim rock canyon, each drum beat, a heart beat. We will have a traditional salm on bake, cooked over smokey alderwood, a savory taste o f trad itio n th at has gone unchanged for genera tions. We will have a silent auc tion and oral auction, filled with hand-crafted art from our tribal artisans, so you can take a piece o f Warm Springs hom e with you. Please join us! I would have stayed in pain, self-pity, depression; an ger, fear and blaming and at tacking others for my life is sues.
