Spilyay Tym oo, W arm Springs, O regon Pgge 2 Septem ber 18, 2013 Cover Oregon training Mining potential at Government Island Tribal Council heard an update last week on parcels o f tribal land at th e C olum bia R iver Gorge. O ne o f the parcels, G overnm ent Island, has the potential to generate som e revenue through the sale o f rock from the property. Some o f the rock on the island meets the fed eral standards for hard ness, which is good news, said Bobby Brunoe, gen eral m an ag e r o f the N a tu ra l R eso u rces Branch. The rock that does not meet the federal Standard could be marketed to the state standard, such as for jetty rock, Brunoe said. An issue'is that there is currently no large con struction project; such as. highway or marina work, near the Government Is land site, B runoe said. The cost o f transporting the rock then becomes an issue. Still; in the long term , “T h e o u tlo o k is promising,” Brunoe said. The tribes own m ost •of the 29-acre G overn m e n t Isla n d property. B runoe said the Tribal Council w ould have to determine how far down the tribes would like to mine Government Island. There will be from four to six sign-up stations at the library, said Craig G raham , Comm unity Health Resource Center ad ministrator. This is part o f the tribal effort in working with Cover O regon, to im plem ent the federal A ffordable H ealth Care Act. There will also be health care coverage assistance at the clinic. Tribal members who take advantage o f this opportuni ties, beginning October 1, will have greater health care op tions. The organization will also benefit by having greater bill ing options, allowing in time for expanded health services at the clinic. Students are also encour aged to subm it ideas new mascot and colors, she said. This is open to students from all the grades at the new school. Individuals students or classrooms may submit their suggestions. R equirem ents for submissions: Paper size, 9 by 12 construction paper; Mascot design should in clude chosen colors, and can be drawn with color pencils, crayons, markers, or created digitally. Colors: no fewer than two colors, and no m ore than four. Submissions should be re ceived by Oct. 1. The school district is also Glenna DeSouza, principal of the Warm Springs k-8 school. A preliminary review o f the site shows there may be potential for a tim ber project, Brunoe said. Council members said th is is a p ro je c t w orth pursuing. For 2014 the tribes are looking at possibly cut ting the tribal general fund budget in half, said C ouncilm an K ahseuss Jackson. Any new rev enue will be needed to al leviate the pain o f these cuts, he said. The other . C o u n cil m em b ers agreed. Brunoe said the parcel may also have the potential for a later sale o f rock.
