Mining potential at
Government Island
Tribal Council heard
an update last week on
parcels o f tribal land at
th e C olum bia R iver
Gorge.
O ne o f the parcels,
G overnm ent Island, has
the potential to generate
som e revenue through
the sale o f rock from the
property.
Some o f the rock on
the island meets the fed
eral standards for hard
ness, which is good news,
said Bobby Brunoe, gen
eral m an ag e r o f the
N a tu ra l
R eso u rces
Branch.
The rock that does not
meet the federal Standard
could be marketed to the
state standard, such as for
jetty rock, Brunoe said.
An issue'is that there
is currently no large con
struction project; such as.
highway or marina work,
near the Government Is
land site, B runoe said.
The cost o f transporting
the rock then becomes an
issue. Still; in the long
term , “T h e o u tlo o k is
promising,” Brunoe said.
The tribes own m ost

B runoe said the Tribal
Council w ould have to
determine how far down
the tribes would like to
mine Government Island.
