Team reviews risk survey results T h e re are specific fac tors in a young person’s life th at bring risk. T hese risk factors can le a d to d ru g u se , v io len ce, d e lin q u e n cy and dropping out, depression and teen pregnancy. T here are also specific factors that bring protec tion from these problems. E lim in a tin g th e risk factors and grow ing the protective factors will lead to happier and healthier young people, and a bet ter com m unity overall. T his was the topic o f d is c u s s io n a t a r e c e n t m eeting in W arm Springs am ong com m unity health specialists. The information will give the tribes good information to work with in reducing the risk factors and increas ing the protective factors... Risk factors m ay include bullying at school, lack o f feeling part o f the com m u nity, a n d lack o f c u ltu ral activities, to n am e a few. A n o th er goal o f the sur vey w as to d e te rm in e th e level o f h isto ric a l trau m a am ong young people in the com m unity. H is to r ic a l tr a u m a is passed from generation to generation, originating from a traum atic event th at h ap pened to a com m unity in the past. T he loss o f tra ditional land and culture, the loss o f the community itself, w ould be causes o f historical trauma that con tinue to exit across the gen erations. H istorical traum a was d ifficu lt to m easu re in the students w ho partici pated in the survey, com p a red to the o th e r risk factors, Catalano said. H e is w o rk in g o n a analysis o f th e survey, a n d th e re su lts will be available for study. In addition, they received instruction on applying to col lege and seeking financial aid and scholarships. S tudents’ families partici pate in the w elcom e celebra tion at the beginning o f the w eek and retu rn for a closing ceremony. “I never th o u g h t I could go to college, b u t n o w I think I can,” D aisy Begay said at last year’s closing ceremony. “T h e success o f last year’s p ro g ram d e m o n stra tes th a t students w ho learn how to set goals develop self-confidence, im prove their com m unication a n d le a d e rs h ip skills, a n d learn the steps needed to en roll in college are m ore likely to stay in high sc h o o l an d consider college as an option for their future,” said Ricketts. ‘W e are so fortunate th at w e can resp o n d to targeted needs by fo cu sin g on p r o gram s th a t b e n efit children and families in o u r local com m u n itie s ,” sa id C a rm a s M om arich, executive director o f the C ow Creek U m pqua Indian Foundation.
