H ave you w ondered what was going on? By the end o f this sum- rfier, four new communica tions towers will be installed or-upgraded throughout the reservation to help bring better phone and internet ser- , vice to homes. The new towers will also improve two-way radio cov erage for first-responders in S eekseequa, S im nasho, Schoolie Flats and Sidwalter. Made possible through a series o f D e p a rtm e n t o f H om eland Security grants, these projects will im prove inter-operable radio commu nications in and around the reservation. In addition to the funding received from H omeland Se curity, ' W arm S prings Telecom will be able to ex pand its service area, as it com pletes its $5.6 million American Recovery and Re investment Act project. M ore good news is that Warm Springs Telecom and the Public Safety Branch are working closely together to com bine their funding re sources for the benefit o f all tribal members. for the installation o f a ra dio equipment shelter at that location. Both were installed last month. W ith in th e n ex t tw o m onths, the Public Safety Branch will install two new radio repeaters at Sidwalter L o o k o u t. W arm S prings Telecom plans to have their new service available around the same time. N e w to w e rs WS. Telecom installed two new tow ers ju st this p ast month. The first, a 120-foot tower located on Schoolie Flats, will serve homes in Schoolie Flats an d Sim nasho w ith fixed- wireless phone and internet service. The second tower, located above the Pelton Dam, will provide similar services to residents along the Deschutes River and to additional resi dents in the Warm Springs agency area. The Telecom will activate service at those two towers by the end o f September. Also in the spirit o f shared resources, a federal H om e land Security grant paid for the installation o f an electri cal system for the existing Sidwalter Lookout Tower. (( We are also going to work on install ing a fib er optic link from Warm Springs to Madras to attract more high tech opportunities to the tribes...” Lonny Macy, planner S ee ks ee q u a p ro je ct Courtesy W.S. Telecom New Seekseequa tower and Radio Shelter, a jo int project of W arm Springs Telecom and the Public Safety Branch. The grant was to the tribes’ Public Safety Branch, while Warm Springs Telecom paid Meanwhile, tribal mem bers living in Seekseequa may have noticed recently that a new tower has been installed above Seekseequa Junction. This 140-foot tower was funded through a Homeland Security grant and will house radio repeaters for the po lice and fire departments. For this site, the Warm Springs T elecom ; covered the cost o f a radio shelter, which will eventually house the tribal Telecom’s equip m ent for residential phone and internet service. Jose Matanane, Telecom general m anager, said o f these joint projects, “The sharing o f telecommunica tions infrastructure between the Public Safety Branch and Warm Springs Telecom is re ally u n iq ue w ith in In d ian Country, and cotild serve as a model for other tribal na tions. M atan ane ad d ed , “ By pooling resources, both orga nizations extend their capa bilities and leverage each dol lar invested for the benefit o f all tribal members. This is an other example o f our com mitm ent to serve the entire reservation w ith advanced communications.’’ According to tribal plan n er, L o n n y Macy, th ese p ro jects are the resu lt o f many years o f planning. ‘W e have taken a phased approach to building out the public safety radio network,” Macy said, “with a total o f seven grants being im ple mented since 2007.” W arm Springs Telecom! has leveraged its installations, j funded through their federal! stimulus dollars, for the ben-; efit o f Public Safety. “This; helps everyone on the reset-! vation,” Macy said. H e also acknow ledged! that there is still more work! to be done. “These new installations! won’t improve cell phone cov erage, and we know that wider! c e ll p h o n e coverage is a! strong need for tribal mem-j bers,” Macy said. “That’s something we are talking to the cell phone pro viders about. We are also go ing to work on installing a fi ber optic link from W arm Springs to Madras to attract more high tech opportunities! to the tribes, part o f the next) development phase o f Warm Springs Telecom.” The Warm Springs Telecom-\ munications Company is a trihally\ chartered enterprise whose mission is to bring advanced broadband ser vices to the Warm Springs tribe r, including voice, data and video.
