Coquille tribe has a casino along th e co ast at N o rth Bend, one o f nine tribal casi nos in Oregon. The Coquille proposal has drawn opposition from the Cow Creek Band o f Umpqua Tribe o f Indians, which at tracts M edford residents to its casino 70 miles north along Interstate 5. The Cow Creek tribe has “ancient rights to this area as well as a m odern presence,” Chairman D an Courtney told the Medford council. Several residents called foul over the proposed gam bling business, but a Medford resident who had worked at the Coquille tribe’s Mill Ca sino said a second one in M e d fo rd sh o u ld b e ap- (AP) - A proposal to turn a Medford bowling alley and restaurant into a tribal casino has drawn opposition at a p u b lic h earin g and sp o t lighted a division between two tribes. The City Council held a public hearing on the p ro posal last week but isn’t ex pected to take a stand until later. Decisions by the state and federal governments will be critical to the chances for the Coquille Indian Tribe to open w hat w ould be its second Oregon casino. Gov. John Kitzhaber has yet to weigh in on the Co quille proposal but has said an agreem ent w ould lim it tribes to one casino each. Paul Piguë o f Central Point said he is “emotionally” opposed to the casinò but wants to hear the arguments. “I ’m willing to be co n vinced that the casino is OK,” he,said.
