Can you guess who it is? She has: • Success in substantial weight loss; • Made extreme healthy eating habit changes • A significant other who is a ‘health freak’; • Had challenges in chang ing, her lifestyle and a life o f bad eating habits: • Does catering business now that offers treats includ ing healthy choices. T h e answ er is V esta Johnson, who has been a par ticipant in the program since June o f 2012. W hat does it mean that she is a participant? The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) empowers people (participants) to pre vent diabetes. To be a part o f the program the person Vesta Johnson must be diagnosed with Pre- D iabetes, which means the person is at higher risk o f getting diabetes. The person’s blood sugar levels are higher th an norm al, b u t n o high enough for a diagnosis o f dia betes. In July o f 2012, the Tony Robbins Conference changed her life and taught overcom ing fear and being healthy is a reachable goal. Winona shared life stories and information on being a participant, and Montell ex plained her personal, experi ences with becom ing m ore physically active (as vesta states “ becam e a h ealth freak”). In the program she says she learned a foundational education. The cooking class and, sh arin g o f fo o d s to m ake h e a lth ie r ch o ices, helped her reach her goals. Vesta says the class was h e lp fu l in lea rn in g m o re about the reading o f labels and understanding fat grams. Practicing being mindful when eating has also been an im p o rtan t p art o f learning for her.. Vesta states that the Dia betes and the Diabetes Pre v en tio n P rogram sta ff are , here to change people’s lives. • T hey can m otivate you to care for yourself. So, w ere th e h ealth y changes hard to do? Vesta said that it took some time. But now, with eating fruits and veggies and less fried foods while drinking lots o f water, it has become part o f taking care o f herself. The Diabetes Prevention Program is actually designed to m ake sm all, d o -ab le changes for each individual to ; lead an d c o n tin u e a healthy lifestyle. In closing, Vesta’s message for the community regarding p re v e n tio n o f d iab etés: “W hen you love y o u rself enough to change eating hab its and exercise, life becomes beautiful and the D PP is here to support you.” Seeking research interviewers NORC, a social science research center is seeking reliable, outgoing, persua sive people to conduct in- person interviews within the homes o f residents of the C onfederated Tribes o f Warm Springs. The interviews would be conducted from May through September. You m ust be able tò w o rk 20-plus flexible hours per week, including ev en in g an d w eek -en d hours. You m ust have a car, good driving record and telephone. The pay is $13.41 per ho u r plus .56 cents per mile. Interviewers m ust gain the cooperation o f the re s id e n ts o f sam pled households and maintain strict confidentiality stan dards. Prior interviewing ex perience is helpful but is not required. Fire crews gearing up for season By Sue Matters, K W SO I fo r the Spilyay About 40 people gathered at the W arm Springs Fire M an ag em en t co n fe re n c e room last week to participate in the pre-fire season meet ing. It was an opportunity for Fire M anagement tO' share information and initiate co operation between wild land fire fighting agencies and as sociated organizations that are critical for successful management of wild fire in cidents. There was representation from the Bureau o f Indian Affairs, from O regon D e p a rtm e n t o f F o restry , Jefferson County Fire and the Sheriff’s office, Indian Health Service, Airlink, the S tate F ire M arshall, th e N o rth West C oordination Center, W arm Springs Po lice, Fire & Safety, Natural Resources, Forestry and Fire Management. The outlook is for a pos sible early start to fire sea son in June. Southeast Oregon is espe cially dry. The two big fuels projects for fire management this year will be thinning ef forts at H eH e and Sidwalter buttes. T hat thinning will re-" duce fuels and the trees will be m illed to help reduce costs for the projects. T he W arm Springs Hot" Shots are training and will do their national testing to ward the end o f this m onth and will hopefully be ready; by May 1.
