T he day is an opportu nity for cigarette smokers to once again consider quitting smoking. B ut if I am honest I will tell you that most, not all, b u t a good percentage o f current smokers take this op portunity for granted. I know I did. I began smoking cigarettes when I was just 12 years old. I can’t really say I ever really liked smoking but after awhile it becam e m o re a d e p e n dency than anything else and so for just over 30 years I pretty m uch laughed at the G reat American Smokeout. I figured th at cigarettes w ould be a part o f my life until I was dead but I couldn’t have been more wrong. . I didn’t realize this at the time but the idea o f quitting smoking evoked fear in me, w hat would I do with all that time? How would I calm my rattled nerves? T hose were just a few o f the short-sighted thoughts I had about quitting. I never even gave the Great A m erican S m o k e o u t a chance. B ut then came a day in 2004, as I was walking up a d fit is this Thursday, short hill by the river with a nice redside trout. The little hill was probably about 20 feet fro m b o tto m to to p , about 50 feet long and in no way would be considered a physical challenge, b ut for me it was. W hen I reached the top I was short o f breath. It was like I just ran a mile. I t was th e n I began to think about the damage that smoking was doing to my well being. My health was in ques tion, my m oney was being w asted and I always reeked o f cigarettes. A change was needed. I had heard about smok in g c e ss a tio n p ro g ra m s, patches and other things to help people quit. I never took advantage o f any o f it until I got mad about smoking. - I began a co n v ersatio n with the Warm Springs Com m u n ity H e a lth E d u c a tio n Team, who let me know about some opportunities. O n more or less a dare I decided to give it a shot. W hat I learned from the O regon Q uit Line and the Com m unity H ealth E duca tion team was there are some basic im portant steps to en sure success in quitting smok ing. Those steps include words like accountability, desire, de termination and promise, just to name a few. So I dove in head first not knowing if I would succeed, but hopeful I might. I followed the advice o f the quit line. I set a date six m o n th s ahead for my quit day and each day I worked toward my goal, Little things like delaying a cigarette jus't a few minutes, and choosing to n o t smoke inside my car and house were huge. As time w ent by I be gan to see little victories and was encouraged. I su rro u n d ed m yself by people who were equally en couraging, as I prepared for this life changing event. I imagined how a life cigarette free would be and I dreamed about walking by the river w ith o u t g e ttin g s h o r t o f breath. T h en came my quit day, February 14, 2005.1 selected that day because the quit line said pick a date that is signifi cant. So I picked Valentines Day because o f the imagery o f the heart. • ■ O n that day I woke up at 4:30 a.m . an d b eg an in a much different way. Instead o f lighting up, I slapped on a nicotine patch and prepared for w hat I thought would be the toughest day o f my life. N o cigarettes, no lighter and a new vision. I even had a drawings and special turkey awards also on tap for the weekend. Though it was difficult that first week I made it without one cigarette. And the more time I spent not smoking I quickly found more time for o th er things. T h e longer I w ent without, the better I felt. I thought I might fall when, two weeks later, I had to re duce my patch strength. But I didn’t, and in a m onth’s time I was o ff the patch and still n o t smoking. N ow seven years later I am still a non smoker. I have no desire to sm oke and quite frankly th e sm ell o f ciga rettes annoys me. I never thought I could do it. I thought o f excuses to fail, and I let that motivate me. And if I can do it, so can you! I thought it was im pos sible; it w asn’t. I thought it would be painful; it wasn’t. I thought I would lose a part o f me, b u t I didn’t. In Warm Springs the In dian H ealth Service P h ar macy offers a smoking ces sation program. It’s the same one I used. This Thursday would be a great day to start a conversation and at least learn about the opportunity. I did and it is still the single greatest choice I ever made.
