Dave McMechan/Spilyay Continuing battle against dropping out As o f last m onth, there were 974 Native Americans enrolled in the 509-J school district, according to Deanie Smith, chair o f the Johnson O ’Malley Committee. “There are approximately 100 students in each grade, k-5,” she said. “In middle school, that number can drop as low as 60 in each grade. In high school, th at figure can go as low as in the 40s.” T his year, th ere are 51 Native American seniors en rolled in 509-J. It is estimated that last year, 54 graduated. “We are still fighting the same battles o f retention and dropout rates,” Smith said. I f this tren d con tin u es, Smith predicts that over the next 13 years, 350 students will graduate out o f 900. ' Serving Centra! T he contribution comes from the Siletz Tribal Chari table Contribution Fund. In all, the fund recently d istributed $126,729 to 48 non-profit organizations. The checks were presented o n May 4 at th e C hin o o k Winds Casino Resort in Lin coln City. The Siletz Tribe has now given m ore than $9.5 million through its Charitable Contri bution Fund. C hinook W inds has dp- nated nearly $ 2 3 million in cash and fund-raising items since it opened in 1995.
