Continuing battle against dropping out
As o f last m onth, there
were 974 Native Americans
enrolled in the 509-J school
district, according to Deanie
Smith, chair o f the Johnson
O ’Malley Committee.
“There are approximately
100 students in each grade,
k-5,” she said. “In middle
school, that number can drop
as low as 60 in each grade.
In high school, th at figure
can go as low as in the 40s.”
T his year, th ere are 51
Native American seniors en
rolled in 509-J. It is estimated
that last year, 54 graduated.
“We are still fighting the
same battles o f retention and
dropout rates,” Smith said.
I f this tren d con tin u es,
Smith predicts that over the
next 13 years, 350 students
will graduate out o f 900.
