It is always stressed. w: This sound is a little s o fte r than the English’ w ” . it is similar to th e “ w ” in “w ill” . ‘: (glottal stop) This sound is the same as tha t heard in English between the tw o “ o’s” o f “ cooper ate” or n the intejection sometimes written “ uh- uh” . It is made by closing o ff he breath and then releasing in deep in the throat, around the adams apple, at a place called he glottis; hence this sound is called a “ glottal stop.” Hard consonants Wasc has a series o f con sonants th a t are made by combining a consonant with the glottal stop, the glottal stop is pronounced together with or immedi ately after the consonant. This tives extra force or emphasis to t he conso nant. In fact, when Wasco was first written, these consonants were written with an exclamation point (I). Today, we write them by putting the sign fo r the glottal stop C) after the consonant letter. These sounds are called “ hard” or “ glottal,¡zed” consonants. One way to learn to pro nounce these consonants is to pretend th a t you have a little piece of paper on your,ip tha t you re trying to blow o ff s you say the consonant. For instance, to learn to pronounce” p’ ” imagine thatyou have a piece of - paper stuck to your lip th a t you are trying to blo o ff by pronouning “ p” with extra force.
