Hard consonants
Wasc has a series o f con
sonants th a t are made by
combining a consonant
with the glottal stop, the
glottal stop is pronounced
together with or immedi
ately after the consonant.
This tives extra force or
emphasis to t he conso
nant. In fact, when Wasco
was first written, these
consonants were written
with an exclamation point
(I). Today, we write them
by putting the sign fo r the
glottal stop C) after the
consonant letter. These
sounds are called “ hard” or
“ glottal,¡zed” consonants.
One way to learn to pro
nounce these consonants
is to pretend th a t you
have a little piece of paper
on your,ip tha t you re
trying to blow o ff s you
say the consonant. For
instance, to learn to
pronounce” p’ ” imagine
thatyou have a piece of
- paper stuck to your lip
th a t you are trying to blo
o ff by pronouning “ p” with
extra force.
The Hard Consonnts are:
c’
ch’
y: Sounds like “y ” in
“yes”
z: Sounds like “ z” in
“ zoo”
‘ (glottal stop) sounds like
a catch in the th ro a t; like the
sound betw en “ p” and “ e” in
:P,E,: n o t “ pee” b u t “ pee’ee”
