V ictim s o f Crim e Services V olunteer D elsa Jim said th e VOCS women’s group recendy sent homemade Christmas cards to the hospital for recovering soldiers. A c c o rd in g to J im , th e women’s group is an oudet for women w ho need support and are victims o f domestic violence. Jim brought several o f her nieces to a women’s group meet ing where everyone made holi day cards to send to recovering so ld iers at th e W alter R eed Army Hospital. T he activity was supervised and organized by Tina Aguilar, a victim advocate, with assistance fro m V io la G o v e n o r, A u rel Stinson, and Jim. The group wrote inspirational messages inside the cards, Jim said, and added that they made quite a few cards. “It was really cute,” Jim said. “It was a good event for them .” The project aimed to let sol diers know that som eone sup ported them, Jim added. It also showed those involved with the w om en’s group th at there are people w ho need help and sup p o rt during the holiday season. As for her nieces, Jim said, “They learned a really good les son that it’s good to help oth ers.” The group requested that any N ative soldiers at the hospital be given cards first, followed by soldiers that received little to no support. “We thank our soldiers for their dedication and service, and hope that these cards can bring them a little extra joy in Decem ber,” Jim w rote in a letter en closed with the cards. Conference focuses on elder safety at home W arm Springs Fire and Safety received a scholarship for a departm ent employee to attend a special training conference earlier this m onth in Boston. The conference was dedi cated to helping older adults with fire and fall prevention. T h e c o n feren ce, called “Remembering When: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program VOCS women’s support group taking break T he Victims o f Crim e Ser vices W om en’s su p p o rt group will be taking a break from D e cember 8 and resuming on Janu ary 12, 2009 due to the holiday for O lder Adults,” was devel oped by the National Fire Pre v en tio n A ssociation, and the C enters for D isease C o n tro l and Prevention. Its purpose was to help older adults live safely at hom e for as long as possible. Some statistics from the conference: A t age 65, older adults are twice as likely to be killed or in jured by fires o r falls compared to the population at large. N ativ e A m ericans 65 and older are almost twice as likely to die in a fire as the general population the same age, accord ing to the Centers for Disease C ontrol and Prevention. Thirty percent o f people age 65 and older are involved in falls each year, the leading cause o f death from uninten tional injury in the home. In the U.S. and Canada, adults age 65 and older make up about 12 percent o f the popu lation — and their num bers are increasing.
