The Jefferson County Little League Major Girls Softball Team headed to the State tournament this week In Gresham, following their win at the District 5 tourney. The team manager is Karla Patt, and the coach Is Trey Leonard. From the coach’s point o f view, Pi-Ume-Sha Treaty Days Boxing was a success. “We lost three and won two,” said coach Austin Smith. “And we had one accident (a knockout) that won’t ever happen again.” Warm Springs Boxing N a tion won the main event o f the evening. About 250 people at tended the matches, held in the Warm Springs gym. Representing Warm Springs, O.J. Johnson boxed an opponent from the W hite City Boxing Club, in the 185-pound division. “O.J. could have scored a lot of points but there was nothing to lay his punches in on,” said Smith. “H e looked to be in good shape and didn’t get tired. He did a g o o d job b u t lo st on points.” T rev o r Tewee, 20, from Pendleton, boxed in the 155- pound division. “Trevor was the lighter opponent,” said Smith. Tewee had been away from boxing for a while before this match, and he came in with no recent sparing. He boxed Ronald Briggs from the Vancouver Box ing Club. Tewee lost in the first round. “He wants to box again. It was good to see him back in the ring and back in action,” said Smith. “In some sports you strike out, fly out, get snuffed, or tap out, but in boxing some times you get knocked out. But you always get back up.” Leander Smith boxed in the 135-pound division against Jun ior Zurita of the Beaverton Box ing Club. “It was a good bout with two o p en b o x ers,” said Sm ith. “Leander was in good shape and he was ready for the match.” Leander won this bout by decision. The main event for 2008 Pi- Ume-Sha Treaty Days Boxing was Warm Springs Boxing Club heavyweight Oitz Johnson vs. Cody Gates o f the Grand Av enue Boxing Club in Portland. r “Oitz fought a really good fight,” said Coach Smith. “He used his experience and his calm. All the hard work paid off and Warm Springs Nation won the main event. It was a crowd pleaser.” Smith said he wishes to thank all the people who support box ing, and all the clubs that par ticipated in Pi-Ume-Sha Treaty Days Boxing. “I would like to thank offi cials, and special thanks goes out to the best fight doctor, Dr. Leland Beamer,” said Smith. “He enjoys his work and cares about the youth, and we appre ciate that.” Thanks goes to Miss Warm Springs Cyrille Mitchell for the Lord’s Prayer, and to the Horse Thief Singers from Chiolquin, and Quinten Biddles and his group o f singers.
