C hief Smith, Pearl Van Pelt, Selena Boise and Louie Smith w on the mixed doubles tourna m ent hosted in h onor o f the late Wayne Schjoll over father’s day weekend. Schjoll was killed in a m otor cycling accident earlier this year. T he well-known businessm an ow ned several businesses, in cluding the Rialto Tavern where the tournam ent was held. Clint Smith and Karla Bagley- Tias served as tournam ent di rectors. “It was to honor the memory o f Wayne Schjoll,” Smith ex plained. “H is son w an ted to have a memorial tournam ent so he asked m e and Karla Bagley- Tias if we could put on a tour nam ent in memory o f him.” A c c o rd in g to S m ith , 17 ‘teams played in the tournament, including teams from Washing ton, P ortland and throughout Chief s team went undefeated to win the tournament. D uring the double-elimi nation tournament, everyone on th e w in n e r’s side co m p leted matches in a race to win seven total matches. O n the losing side o f the bracket, teams competed to win 5 matches. As for w hether the event will be held again next year, Smith said he thinks that is very likely. “T hat’s still kind o f up in the air right now but I think the fam ily would like to make it an an nual, yearly thing,” Smith said. Smith also wanted to thank all the players for participating, as well as the vendors w ho do nated items for the raffle and fo r prizes, tro p h ies, jackets, sweatshirts and t-shirts. Thanks to all the players for participating. More than likely its going to be an annual thing. We w ant to thank a lot o f the vendors that donated items for the raffle and for the prizes, the trophies and the jackets and sweatshirts and t-shirts. The team, coached by Tiger Van Pelt and Alvis Smith III, won their game against the Hermiston All Stars, but lost to the North Bend All Stars, and to the Bend South All Stars, who were the eventual tournament champions. Youth tackle football league taking sign-ups Jefferson County youth foot ball is a tackle football league com prised o f two age groups o f p lay ers fro m J e f fe rs o n County. Fourth- and fifth-grad ers are com bined; and sixth- graders have their own squad. T he league is sponsored by B end M etro P ark and Recre- ation District. All equipm ent is provided, w ith the exception o f m outh guards and shoes. Cost o f the program is $110. Practices are twice a week starting in mid August and last all season. G am es start in Septem ber and go through O ctober and are played on Sunday afternoons in Prineville and Bend. Applications can be picked up at the Spilyay Tymoo or the Ma dras Pioneer.
