Participants in the last work shop were very pleased with the outcome o f the workshop held last spring. We would like to share w ith you w hat one participant w rote to Dr. Creelman during week five o f the workshop: I have learned th at I have som e Chronic m edical condi tions. I can let them defeat me or I can rise above them and learn to go on with my life. M eeting w ith other people w ho also have chronic medical conditions has let m e vent my frustrations and anger in a posi tive way. There are many ways to solve problems. Some times all you have to do is to brain storm to come up with new so lutions. Positive communication with family, friends and care givers to be facilitators. I' Arlene also participated in can resolve guilty feelings when one can not always take part in the last six week w orkshop that w as re c e n tly h e ld by J o d i F ic k e tt, P in k y B ey m er an d Maria Godines. Arlene and Pinky live with a chronic condition and Maria is a care provider for an elder who has a chronic condition. T hrough the w orkshop we teach problem solving, goal set ting, and the ability to self-man- age using action plans, mental relaxation cd ’s, visualization, breathing techniques, exercise, activities. Using the T state m ents can open up comm uni cation. W hen people comm u nicate everyone com es o u t a winner. Learning to deal with pain in a positive way can be hard to do. Relaxing and diverting the mind to other thoughts can help a lot. Letting others know, “I am sore today, I may need your help,” lets family and friends know in a positive way how one feels. O n e has to be in fo rm ed about their medical conditions. O ne can read books or go online to learn about their medical con ditions. H e or she can question and talk to their doctors and pharmacists. D on’t be afraid to as a dumb question. M ost doc tors will be glad to talk with you. Maintaining one’s health with good diet, exercise and taking one’s m edication properly can help one to feel b e tte r b o th physically and mentally. T he Learning to Live w ith Chronic Conditions Workshop has been a learning experience for me. I can change my point o f view and feel goo d about life. We will all have some dark days in our lives, but they make us appreciate the sunny days even more.” We look forward to new par ticipants and we invite those who have atten d ed th e w orkshop before to come back again.
