Trash sites O n June 14 and 15 there was a Memorial pool tournam ent that took place in Madras. This tournament was a complete suc cess. This tournament was held in memory of the late Wayne Schjoll. Wayne was the owner of the Rialto Tavern and has sup port the pool community here for years. There was a lot of work that went into making this happen. I would like to thank Clint Smith, Dixon Polk, Lynn Davis, Sherri Smith, Seagray Littieleaf; and I’m sure there are I w anted to brin g the com m unity’s atten tio n to a growing, but discouraging trend happening here in W arm Springs. While swimming at the creek with my kids I noticed a large pile of trash located nearby. I have noticed that illegal trash sites are more consistently lo cated near the Shitike Creek. The illegal trash sites are very unattractive and can have sig- nificandy negative health affects. Some of the possible health af fects can include: hepatitis, blood borne pathogens, bacterial infec tions, and other preventable dis eases. Identity theft is another prob lem that can result from personal information left in the illegal dum psites. A t one o f the dumpsites we found documents containing birthdates, social se curity numbers, prescriptions, children’s names, court case documents and other personal identifiable information, which could lead to identity theft. Some of the kids often use the waste as submersible objects to dive after. They can unknow ingly endanger themselves by playing with dangerous or con m any th a t I am forgetting. W ith tam inated objects. out people like these folks to help out this type of tournament would not be possible. Also, I would like to thank many local business owners for their gen erous donations of raffle items and sponsorship of the award items. These include: Kah-Nee- Ta, Desert Inn, Redmond Li quor, Rialto Tavern, Madras A uto, E rickson’s Thriftway, Black H orse Saloon, Harley Davidson, Strut Yo’ Stuff, The Supply Depot, Jerry and Janet Bagley, Raymond Riddle, and Lynn Davis arid Lynn Davis Team. Last but not least I would like to thank all the pool players that came to support the tour nament. We had players from Pordand, Bend and several from Washington. There were 17 four-person teams which put stress on the tournam ent com m ittee right from the get go wondering if we were all going to be taking Monday off work. The bracket was drawn and play started. For . the most part matches went well and everyone seemed to be hav ing a good time. Matches were The Warm Springs youth swim in the Shitike Creek con stantly during the hot summer month's. It is disturbing to see young children swimming in the creek with solid waste located so close by. There have been reports of hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia also located near the swimming areas above the “block.” Parents should be cau tious when allowing their chil dren to swim at certain locations along Shitike Creek. Be sure to inspect each swimming location for drug paraphernalia, broken bottles, household waste, hypo dermic needles, burnt aluminum foil, chemical spills,'snakes, bee hives and other possible health hazards. Remember that we all have responsibility to keep our water, air, and land clean. Have a safe and enjoyable summer. Be safe and drink plenty of water. If you notice any suspicious activity or possible littering, please call the Warm Springs Police Department at (541) 553- 1171.
