E CoosH EEWA: The way it is Thoughts on the casino process Kah-Nee-Ta B y Selena Boise Management Successor So how m any o f you made your casino comments and opin ions known? I made mine online through a link that was sent to me. The web site is gorgecasinoeis.com. T hen I sent the lin k a ro u n d , b e - ~ cause it is im portant Spilyay that o u r opinions be S peaks heard one way o r another. H e a rd a b o u t th e G ra n d Ronde and their concern about the com m ute to and from Cas cad e L o ck s a n d th e W arm Springs Reservation. I just can’t keep up w ith their concerns. Tribal m em bers do need jobs here, b ut then jobs will become available after th e b u d g et is su p p lem en ted to b rin g b ack those jobs that were cut. I was driving through Grande R onde com m unity during the la s t w eek a n d w as lo o k in g around for signs o f how a ca sino could im pact the environ m ent. A fter all, it is a scenic drive to the coast. I didn’t see any kind o f im pact from Spirit M ountain Ca sino or the C hinook W inds Ca sino on the coast. So I don’t see how a, casino could im pact the scenic drive along the Colum bia River. T he businesses along that route probably will get more customers, and that can’t be all that bad. Speaking o f Chinook Winds Casino, there was a good turn K ah-Nee-Ta, will it ever be a success? O f course not, and is still another last chance agree m ent betw een K ah-N ee-Ta and the tribes a good idea? W ho are the people that m ost benefit? A project estim ated to co st $20 m illion m ust have m any b en efits for the local W arm Springs p eople, otherw ise w hy do it? This m oney w ould supposedly be devoted to up-scaling the re sort to a three- o r four-star re sort. O r w ould this m oney be used to give people substantial raises? W ho would be the main players in this up-scaled resort? T he “Indians,” o f course. T he local “Indians” in natural “In dian” surroundings, although highly paid G M ’s never admit ted this. Listen to the people, there m ight be some hope for K ah-Nee-Ta, otherwise, scratch it o ff as a 33-year loser, and make the area a therm o pow er plant. K ah-N ee-T a never was intended to be a tribally ow ned tourist attraction, n o t w ithout the “Indians.” So in reality, nei th e r th e p e o p le o f W arm Springs, no K ah -N ee-T a can afford to wait a few years, the tribes shouldn’t be asked to carry K ah -N ee-T a any longer, n o t w ithout some assurance that it’ll be th e tribal people w ho will benefit. I m o v ed h ere to There was one local m en’s team that placed 7th out o f 132 teams. You can read about it in another article on page 2. This is a big tournam ent and I think it w ould be worthwhile to invite this league to play at o u r casino. O ver a th o u san d p o o l players w alking a ro u n d w ith their pool sticks at the Chi nook W inds casino for a w hole week is quite a site to see. I t can be separate to u rn a m ent established by this league o r a n o th e r league, because I think the players look forward to the tournam ent at the coast every year. T hat is a good loca tion and it is a nice vacation for everyone w ho plays pool. Just thinking out loud. I know that bowling tournaments attract a lot o f people but pool tourna m ents do the same thing. B ut check out the article for sure, these guys played a good game as a team and I think that they d eserv e th e e x tra a tte n tio n . T ook my daughter there and she was overwhelm ed by it, be ing a pool player herself. The games were so intense that she was at the edge o f her seat. W arm Springs. T he reason why I m oved is because my m other accepted a job at the IH S clinic. To be here in O regon is w on derful. I love the natural w on ders that O regon brings. G oing to school here is great. The reason why I chose to go on the field trip was because I w anted to hear w hat the great people o f W arm Springs had to say about the casino wanting to be built at the gorge. There are many reasons why it should be built. B ut w hat I’ve learn ed fro m this experience that you always have to fight for Correction In the previous Spilyay, in the fire safety article on creating defensible space, there was a typo indicating th at the defensible space area around a hom e should be “three feet.” Actually, an d im p o rtan tly fo r fire safety, the space should be 30 feet. The Spilyay apolo gizes for the mistake. your p eo p le an d yo u r rights. L en d in g a h elp in g h an d will change m any lives. Also, all N a tive and non’- Native Americans should be equal. I have learned m any things from this experi ence and will continue to par ticipate in activities like this one.' T hank you for taking the time to read this. Joshua Todeshine. Flint and Celena Scott, owners, Visions o f the West. R ichard W. P ayne Jr., Letters of apology Better things To the W arm Springs com m u nity and surrounding areas, H e llo th e re , firs t o f all, people. Well, I really don’t know how to start b u t I guess I ’ll let everyone know that I have been incarcerated since January 15, 2008. I ’ve been in the Jefferson C ounty since th at time. R ight now I am doing 90 days for things I have done while I was highly intoxicated like driving under the influence. This is go ing to be haunting m e for the rest o f my life because as in toxicated I was I could’ve got ten in to a w reck, ran o ff the road, or hit an oncoming vehicle and could’ve killed myself or the others that were in the vehicle w ith me. A nd luckily this hasn’t happened. I am very thankful that it didn’t because I am in jail for it sure, b u t thank G o d I ’m alive. A n d th e ones w h o m I dearly love are alive and well also, so I w ant to apologize to Melinda F. and her sister M. for putting your lives in danger while I was intoxicated, I am sorry. A nd I know that I owe you more than an apology, I will make it I u p to you w h e n I get ' o u t and sh o w evetyonie-that I w on’t let it happen again. To make sure that it w on’t, I am saying to ev eryone that I have to admit that I am an alcoholic, and I am go ing to do my best to quit using so I d o n ’t jeopardize my life or the lives o f others o r the lives o f others th at I honestly care so m uch for. A nd w hat’s next for m e right now is looking for employment once I do my jail time here in Jefferson County. So for all those w ho are read ing this letter, I hope to touch som eone som ehow and I hope that all those w ho are still using come to realize that alcohol does kill. N o t just drugs and guns. It’s deadly. A nd now I am happy to say that I am ready to m ove on w ithout this in my life, onto bet ter things. So for all you employers out there I ’ll be able to w ork for you at the end o f this m onth. I ’ll fi nally have som ething to brag about and that’s having the abil Troubles, what troubles? M arch 21, 2008, 4:30 a.m. I look back over one o f my writings and decide to share this small part o f my thoughts: It is a very trying time. It is Nov. 6,2007 and l am disgusted and hurt. O ver the years I ’ve w atched the tribal culture and traditions being abùsed, throw n to the side, cast aside like a bro ken toy, only to be used once'in a while. T he E arth is drying up. T he snow packs are less and less. M ore rains sh rin k th e heavy snows at the lower elevations. The roots are now ready before th e a rriv a l o f th e salm p n . Salm on runs vary in num bers and timing. T he deer are jeop ardy, losing feeding and calving areas and subjected to w anton slaughter by the uneducated and supposedly traditional hunters, violators o f nature. T he m o d ern m an is a skilled m indless predator. W hat happened to tak ing only w hat was needed? W here are the tribal people headed? W here have we gone w rong? W hat are thé peo ple thinking? W hy are th e p eople doing w hat they are doing and know it’s n o t traditional? I cannot be lieve w hat is happening! I n o w k n o w w h a t C h ie f Tommy T hom pson meant when Celilo Falls was flooded and he said that losing Celilo and the fishing sites basically signed a death w arrant to the tribal cul tures and traditions in the years to come. T h at was his greatest fear, and it’s happening ever so slowly. A t least some real stories, pic tures an d a scattering o f the w ords o f the language will lin ger on. W here w ere th e teachers? G randpa, D ad, Fathers, W here are you? Were there any real lead ers? W here’s the balance in life? I f we didn’t have a bonus or per capitas, w ould we have any Indians at all?
