keep up w ith their concerns.
Tribal m em bers do need jobs
here, b ut then jobs will become
available after th e b u d g et is

those jobs that were cut.
I was driving through Grande
R onde com m unity during the
la s t w eek a n d w as lo o k in g
around for signs o f how a ca
sino could im pact the environ
m ent. A fter all, it is a scenic
drive to the coast.
I didn’t see any kind o f im
pact from Spirit M ountain Ca
sino or the C hinook W inds Ca
sino on the coast. So I don’t see
how a, casino could im pact the
scenic drive along the Colum
bia River. T he businesses along
that route probably will get more
customers, and that can’t be all
that bad.
Speaking o f Chinook Winds
Casino, there was a good turn
K ah-Nee-Ta, will it ever be a
success? O f course not, and is
still another last chance agree
m ent betw een K ah-N ee-Ta and
the tribes a good idea? W ho are
the people that m ost benefit? A
project estim ated to co st $20
m illion m ust have m any b en
efits for the local W arm Springs
p eople, otherw ise w hy do it?
This m oney w ould supposedly
be devoted to up-scaling the re
sort to a three- o r four-star re
sort. O r w ould this m oney be
used to give people substantial
raises? W ho would be the main
players in this up-scaled resort?
T he “Indians,” o f course. T he
local “Indians” in natural “In
dian” surroundings, although
highly paid G M ’s never admit
ted this. Listen to the people,
there m ight be some hope for
K ah-Nee-Ta, otherwise, scratch
it o ff as a 33-year loser, and
make the area a therm o pow er
plant. K ah-N ee-T a never was
intended to be a tribally ow ned
tourist attraction, n o t w ithout
the “Indians.” So in reality, nei
th e r th e p e o p le o f W arm
Springs, no K ah -N ee-T a can
afford to wait a few years, the
tribes shouldn’t be asked to carry
K ah -N ee-T a any longer, n o t
w ithout some assurance that it’ll
be th e tribal people w ho will
benefit.

think the players look forward
to the tournam ent at the coast
every year. T hat is a good loca
tion and it is a nice vacation for
everyone w ho plays pool.
Just thinking out loud. I know
that bowling tournaments attract
a lot o f people but pool tourna
m ents do the same thing. B ut
check out the article for sure,
these guys played a good game
as a team and I think that they
d eserv e th e e x tra a tte n tio n .
T ook my daughter there and
she was overwhelm ed by it, be
ing a pool player herself. The
games were so intense that she
was at the edge o f her seat.

To the W arm Springs com m u
nity and surrounding areas,
H e llo th e re , firs t o f all,
people. Well, I really don’t know
how to start b u t I guess I ’ll let
everyone know that I have been
incarcerated since January 15,
2008. I ’ve been in the Jefferson
C ounty since th at time. R ight
now I am doing 90 days for
things I have done while I was
highly intoxicated like driving
under the influence. This is go
ing to be haunting m e for the
rest o f my life because as in
toxicated I was I could’ve got
ten in to a w reck, ran o ff the
road, or hit an oncoming vehicle
and could’ve killed myself or the
others that were in the vehicle
w ith me. A nd luckily this hasn’t
happened. I am very thankful
that it didn’t because I am in jail
for it sure, b u t thank G o d I ’m
alive. A n d th e ones w h o m I
dearly love are alive and well
also, so I w ant to apologize to
Melinda F. and her sister M. for
putting your lives in danger while
I was intoxicated, I am sorry.
A nd I know that I owe you more
than an apology, I will make it
I u p to you w h e n I get ' o u t and
sh o w evetyonie-that I w on’t let
it happen again. To make sure
that it w on’t, I am saying to ev
eryone that I have to admit that
I am an alcoholic, and I am go
ing to do my best to quit using

I look back over one o f my
writings and decide to share this
small part o f my thoughts:
It is a very trying time. It is

traditions being abùsed, throw n
to the side, cast aside like a bro
ken toy, only to be used once'in
a while.
T he E arth is drying up. T he
snow packs are less and less.

snows at the lower elevations.
The roots are now ready before
th e a rriv a l o f th e salm p n .
Salm on runs vary in num bers
and timing. T he deer are jeop
ardy, losing feeding and calving
areas and subjected to w anton
slaughter by the uneducated and
supposedly traditional hunters,
violators o f nature. T he m o d
ern m an is a skilled m indless
predator. W hat happened to tak
ing only w hat was needed?
W here are the tribal people
headed? W here have we gone
w rong? W hat are thé peo ple
thinking?
W hy are th e p eople doing
w hat they are doing and know
it’s n o t traditional? I cannot be
lieve w hat is happening!

Tommy T hom pson meant when
Celilo Falls was flooded and he
said that losing Celilo and the
fishing sites basically signed a
death w arrant to the tribal cul
tures and traditions in the years
to come. T h at was his greatest
fear, and it’s happening ever so
slowly.

Street because I was walking down the road. I apologize to the
